I recently took a trip to Australia and New Zealand. While the purpose was ambassadorial, I took my camera along, and got some good shots. I might upload more later, I dunno, it depends on the response to these. These three are my personal favorites from the collection, though others have differing opinions from mine :). Please comment!
Mt. Cook in Fairlie, New Zealand
Devil's Den in Rotorua, New Zealand
Tangalooma Sunset in Moreton Island, Queensland, Australia
That last one is my current desktop background.
Please, please! Comment. My Smoke entry got 2 comments, and a low score. How am I supposed to get better if I don't know what's wrong?

My favourite of the three is Mt. Cook. The composition is well done and the lighting enhances the contrast. There appears to be some lens flare on the left side of the photo.
I'm also partial to sunsets. I like how the colours reflect in the water. (the horizon is slightly tilted)
I like the textures in the Devil's Den, however the lighting seems a bit flat. An adjustment to contrast/brightness and colour balance or a hue/saturation adjustment might help with that.

Thanks for your comments!
The lens flare I didn't notice until I posted the photo... the wonders of new realizations.
I did eventually realize that the horizon was shifted, but not until after I got back. I'm not big on editing shots, even if it is just a rotation.
As for the lighting in Devil's Den, you take what you're given in a New Zealand winter. I quickly found this out as the day I did Mt. Cook was just about the only clear day... and that didn't last past 3 in the afternoon! |

The tilted horizon isn't much. If you had that one framed you could correct it very easily with how you positioned the matte.
I look forward to seeing more.

Nice shots of Mt Cook and the thermal park. You caught the mountain at a good time, later in the afternoon it can be hard to get a good shot of it with the sun coming further around.
I Don't mean to be picky though, but you can't see Mt Cook from Fairlie, that shot looks like it's taken from Mt Cook village.
Can you put a filter on your 2800Z? A circular polariser might have made the mountain photo 'pop' a bit more..
Not fussed on other photo, Australia you say? Where's that? (Kiwi to the core :-) ).

My geographic orientation was rather ignorant at the time. We were staying in Fairlie in a homestay, and the homestay family took us to Mt. Cook Park. Thus, my association.
As far as I know, I can't pop a filter on my 2800Z. I don't like it very much, but being poor, it's rather hard to obtain anything nicer, so I'm thankful. It's given me some good shots still. I didn't go on the trip with photography in mind either, but I happened to have my camera.
Up the all blacks! :) |

I find the balance to be perfect. Is great seeing photos of home. I was at that thermal park around Christmas last year. Have a picture from exactly the same place. |

I like all 3 James, but love the sunset. Rotorua thermal is difficult to photograph but this is good. The last time I went it rained all day
What did you think of New Zealand?
Thanks for sharing. |

In all honesty I found New Zealand to be better than its neighbors to the west. Though they do have the advantage of staying warmer in the winter. New Zealand was absolutely beautiful and the hospitality was great. Makes me wish I were a kiwi.
I took three large cards full of pictures, but with a 2800Z, you never know how a picture will turn out until you have it on a nice monitor. I'll stop being so critical of myself and post some more when I get home from school today. |

Awesome photos James......haven't been that far south for ages. Really like the view of Mt Cook, with Devil's Den's I like the long view you took of the geyser and the layers of rock in the foreground....most of the blurry pics I took at Rotorua involved plopping mud! LOL
Balance of pics seems bout right to me though I think there might be one too few kiwi pics :P
sue
(wouldn't ever guess I'm a kiwi would ya!)
ps BTW beautiful colours on the sunset :) |

Thanks for all the comments once again. I'm having trouble deciding what other pictures to add... I feel like they're all too inferior to be posted on this site. I may force myself to post some more tomorrow... I dunno. |
