So I'm about to purchase this tripod TRIPOD and was wondering what ball head to get with it. Any advice? I've been using the Monfrotto 3021B and Manfrotto 322RC2 ballhead combo since 2006. I was having a problem with my ball head not moving easily and my legs sticking and my hubby squirted WD-40 over it all and it ruined both items.
If any of you have the tripod I'm about to buy, I would also like to know your thoughts on it as well. Thank you. |

That's a very nice tripod. I've played with one, if I didn't already have the Manfrotto your hubby trashed, I'd get me one of those Vanguards. For ballheads I really only like the high end ones, that's probably no help to you... I absolutely love the open design of the Acratech, which is what I'd probably buy, but it costs more than your tripod...

misread the thread title. eminently qualified to give advice on "bald heads" - tripods, not so much. |

+1 on that, used to have one and loved it. Sold it off because it was too big and bulky when I got a smaller more lightweight tripod (Gitzo traveler) similar to the one you are considering. I put an RRS BH-30 on it, which is very solid and smooth, but like the Acratech about twice the cost of your 'pod. |

If I really used it enough to justify, I'd probably buy the RRS head previously linked. I don't. What I currently use is an older version of this one.
Compared to what you were using, the head is a little heavier-duty and it is RC4, which IMO is a *far* superior plate to the RC2. If you don't have a large commitment to the RC2 plates, I'd go over to RC4.

Why is the RC4 better than the RC2? |

It's much more stable and has a better locking system. |

I have this tripod with their sbh-100 ball head and it works great. I used some heavy lenses on it and it holds its ground. If I remember correctly the ball head is rated for 22lbs. You can get the tripod with the head and purchased mine through Adorama. |
