I currently have a Panasonic FZ1 (firmware upgrade to FZ2). My family asked me what I wanted for a present and I told them a DSLR. I cannot stand having a camera with no manual focus option. With limited funds it looks like I'm going to have to go with a Canon 300D if I do what are the best 2 lens I can get for that camera? There are so many to choose from. When I go to one store they tell me Sigma and another store tell me Canon. I'm confused on what make of lens and what type of lens to start out with on a limited budget.

Well if money is an issue I'd suggest saving up and then purchasing a DSLR. The camera is no good unless you don't mind spending some money on lenses. The only inexpensive lens I'd suggest getting would be the Canon 50mm f1.8
Other then that, good lenses cost a lot, Canon or Sigma. I've got a few Sigma lenses and I'm impressed with them. I only settled for Sigma because I can't afford most Canon lenses I want. The Sigma 12-24mm and 70-200mm with 1.4 teleconvertor have been my best investments. Good luck and don't forget about additional accessories too.

Scott, how much cash do you have?

Best advice is to go into a shop and try out some for zoominess, in all honesty. It sounds like you're on a very tight budget, so you're going to be limited to what you can afford. Go out, see what you think you'll use, then look on the web (lens reviews, lens sharpness (slightly dated)) and ask on DPC for opinions.

ΓΆ€ΒΆ As jimmyn4 has already pointed out: Canon EF 50mm/f/1.8 (extremely affordable)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM (very affordable and good)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (very affordable considering quality)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (costly, but great glass)

These, IMHO, are your options. I prefer to stay with Canon lenses because of compatibility (future rechipping?) concerns. Not everyone thinks this way. Both Tamron and Sigma make some good lenses, some not that good.

Thanks for all the advice. I have about $1200 to $1400 budget. Is this a good deal and is the lens good. See link below.
300D with 2/lens-sigma
300D with 2/lens
Which one of these seem to be better?

Don't you still need a memory card with either ?

Hmmm, I don't know much about the Canon lens but I can tell you to stay away from Quantary. Also, as zeuszan stated non-canon lenses could become useless if you upgrade cameras later on. If I had a choice and only one choice I guess I would go with the two Sigma lenses. That said if I had another choice, I'd buy the camera seperate and then pick the lenses I want.

C: None of the above. Given your budget, I would suggest either of these two:

Digital Rebel body only ($790 @ Adorama), Canon F4-5.6, 17-85mm EF-S IS (available this Fall) or...

Digital Rebel with 17-55mm kit lens ($880 @ jr.com), Canon 50mm f/1.8 ($75), and Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS ($390)

In either case, you'll need to add a fast 512MB CompactFlash card, and a camera bag. Happy shopping.

Get a Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di and a Sigma 50-500mm f4.-6.3 EX APO RF HSM, about $1360 plus s&h at B&H. Both are highly rated and comparatively inexpensive. You won't be sorry with either.

It is always better to buy better stuff and have less of it than to by passable equipment that you find yourself wanting to replace down the road. The Sigma lens mentioned in the Wolf Camera ad are their no frills line of lens. They are okay, don't get me wrong. They just focus a little slow, and have high aperature values (as most zooms do on the tele end) If you are going to go with Sigma lens, get one with HSM. This only has to do with focusing faster, however the glass is better with these lens in general than there lower no frills line. Quantaray is a Sigma lens made exclusively for Ritz Camera, so that they don't have to price match anyone, and I have heard enough awful things about them to fill a stadium.

Starting to ramble here, but my main point was buy a good body and the best glass you can afford, but don't feel like you have to buy everything at once. If it were me (and I'm jealous it's not!) I would buy the body, and one lens, the best I could afford. L-Series lens from Canon are superb everytime. (The L in the lens indicates it is a pro series lens and represents the top quality equipment Canon makes) Sorry I don't have specific recommendations for you, but I thought I would throw in some thoughts.

Incidentally, that 50 f/1.8 is an excellent low cost lens and is tack sharp.

Nikon D70 with very good AF-S 18-70 DX kit lens and a 70-something Sigma would be a far better option. The 300D body is way too limited, as is its EF-S kit lens.
