Strange, I thought we were comparing and voting on the entries in each challenge as a wholly contained group - not worldly photos in general.
If that were the case you'd not only have to include the "snapshots" of the world (which there actually are plenty of here on DPC) but also the acclaimed high-end stuff as well (think of all the "in the style of" type photographers, etc...).
There's some great photography here, but there's also enough on the other end to use the entire voting range as intended. |
You certainly can do both.
That's like saying you have to grade on a curve so that 5% of the students have to fail and 5% get As and the rest fall in between. Which is fine if 5% actually do fail and 5% actually are As. But if the majority of the class performs at "A" level, they deserve the As.
if the photos are all awesome, they all get high scores. if they all stink to high heaven, they'll all get low scores. Usually they fall between 4 and 8 for me. I don't give out many 9s and 10s, because I reserve those for incredible photographs. Of which, there are a number on this site. But they certainly don't happen every challenge. 1s and 2s are for the worst photos I've seen. Truly horrible offerings. Of which, there are hardly ever on this site, imo. Most are average or a bit above average.
I give photos what they deserve -- not a higher or lower number because I haven't used those numbers yet, but they're in the scale. |
