I haven't quite figured out all the details, but I am hoping that others might like the idea and help with the brainstorming.

I would like to see a challenge that eventually - after the voting - becomes a handy reference tool.

Here is what we would need to do:

1) Come up with a list of topics/techniques/artistic considerations/ etc , for example: shallow DOF, long exposure, backlighting, silhouettes, lens flares, golden ratio, flash, light painting, etc etc etc.

2) The hard part is this: I want to end up with very even numbers for each one, e.g. NOT with 90 of entries using shallow DOF. I think ideally everyone would PICK one if they think they can come up with the PERFECT example (remember the teaching part of this). We could also randomly assign them, but then perhaps the results wouldn't be quite as good. I haven't yet figured out a way that is totally sensible, fair, easy and won't cause tantrums. I'd be happy to take on the book-keeping part of it and not participate (since I'd know who picked which topic).

3) Name your entry according to your topic, so in future someone who wants to know what "golden ratio" means, can look up this challenge and see 3 (or 4 or 5 or whatever) fantastic examples of it, plus browsing through the entries will offer a wealth of knowledge and ideas.

4) Our scores will be a combination - perhaps 1/3 on the merit of the photo by itself (like a free study) and 2/3 according to how well the topic is represented.

Advanced editing rules (although we may need to allow certain extra elements, depending on topics picked).

Yeah, I knowâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦ the whole idea is a bit of a mouth-full, but something we could be proud of in the end.

Thoughts?

This is a good idea, and if it goes nowhere, a side challenge with the same should be pursued.

I would sooo go for this but I would be the learnee not the teacher LOL..

My suggestion would be not to have it in such a challenge seperately per say
but perhaps just do it as a side challenge and make each section its own thread therefore you can do as many sections as you wish for and not worry about a challenge and it will always be there.. I would so get into this!

If I need light, I can just go to that thread.. if I want the DOF I could go to that thread.. and then have these threads pinned by SC that way they are always at the top and maybe even put these threads in the hints/tips and help section instead of the side challenge.. Many ways I can see this happen..

(Edited to add)

Then you wouldn't have to worry about people doing so much and anyone could add their own pictures, tutorials, past challenge links and their own help thoughts on things at any time

Right now, I have been spending a lot of time learning about light/flash photogaphy, but there is just so much to it, call it another can of worms

Perfect idea especially for a newbie!

There is a book that changed my life. Light: Science & Magic. Buy it. Nuff said.

If you wanted this as a challenge, it could be "Photographic Technique Diptych"

Post a photo using one or more of these (insert list here) photographic techniques with a photo representing HOW you got the first photo as your second.

Clearly there is very little interest/support for this, so I'll just shut up and disappear back into the shadows once again.
