I just looked through the Smoke and Mirrors challenges, and a bunch of the comments that I made on people's images are missing. I looked on many individual photos that I remember commenting on, and there is no longer any comment there.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Anyone else missing any comments?

One possibility is that your vote wasn't counted for some reason. Do you see the red bar indicating what you rated the image?

Yes I am also missing comments that I have made. It can be frustrating if you have made lenthy comments. I do vote at home and from work, don't know if that is the problem? |

Yes, my votes were all counted and I do see the red bars. I voted for every image in the last two challenges, which appear to be the only ones with missing comments. I'm only using one computer and I am the only one with a DPC account in our family, so that isn't the issue. Very strange...

Bumperooni...
Anyone else know anything about this problem or has anyone else experienced this as well? I'd really like to find out if this is a known issue or if mine was an isolated incident. Thanks!

I have possibly found the cause of comments disappearing. There seems to be some kind of a timeout that occurs if a voting page is open to long. When submitted after a long time maybe 30 Minutes or so there seems to be a different action than usual, instead of showing the next photo for voting the initial voting page with the thumbnails shows up and the image just recently commented on has no vote and no comment. |

You have to vote on 20% of the entries or else your votes are tossed out. Perhaps comments too. |

It happened to me also. It's not the "time out" feature, because I checked always if all the comments are there after I finished voting. I voted on all the images and commented about 25-30% of them.
I thought maybe they weren't found helpful - that's why.
I also feel bad because of it.

I have no explanation for why that would happen, but I'm pretty sure it's not intentional. There are plenty of comments out there that aren't marked as helpful but they're still displayed, and people can comment on challenges they aren't eligible to vote in, so that wouldn't be a reason to remove them either.
Hopefully your comments aren't completely gone, and will reappear after whatever the problem is gets fixed.

I have verified this. I opened a photograph for voting (after having voted on 23% of the challenge). Wrote a comment, left the browser unattended for 45 minutes, voted and BANG, back to the thumbnail page and the photograph just commented on had no comment.
As I said before I suspect that this is a timeout problem and is probably related to cookies and the measuring of users being online.

Comments are not thrown out if votes are thrown out. I'll look into this.
Can you give me examples of some photos on which you commented that the comments are now missing?

I've noticed it also. Is it possible that your own comments don't show up when you are signed on, but show up on someone else is signed on? |

I did try this again on a photo in the Poverty challenge with the title "One Of May. Why?"
The timestamp at the bottom of the page when opened for commenting:
Current Server Time: 10/28/2004 07:46 PM EDT
Timestamp of the page that followed after giving vote:
Current Server Time: 10/28/2004 08:23 PM EDT
Result - no comment on the photograph.

Yes, if you leave your browser for an extended period, your session with DPC will time out. This will cause you to get kicked back to the thumbnail page. The vote and comment will not register, AFAIK. If you suspect you may have timed out, copy your comment to the clipboard, then submit it, and if you get kicked back, go back to the photo and paste the comment in and resubmit.
If comments are being registered and then are disappearing, that's a completely different issue. You should be able to determine if your comments are registering by looking at the comments counter on your profile page. Unlike most of the other statistics, these are updated "live", so you can look before a commenting session, manually count how many comments you'e made, then go back to check if the count matches yours.
