I am all for editing ion every shape or form. But I thought we were supposed to hold on to photographic integrity and keep some feeling of the real world.

I am unsure about including the 2nd place feather - a nice image but it does look like pink clouds have been created as if from a psychedelic trip.

I am obviously in the majority by some huge distance here, but this highlights my taste versus the taste of the average DPC voter which is something I am currently questioning.
Maybe I am a grumpy old man, but I agree!

It seems that the photo you take is no longer the issue, but how you can manipulate it in photoshop that wins the day. I have PS and others, but don't really use them as I feel like a cheat when I do.

I try to capture a shot and enter it straight from the camera, with some minor cropping and lightening. My camera is capable, but not a DSLR, but I try to capture something that meets a challenge.

I could change it beyond all recognition with PS, but what's the point, It's a photographic site after all, isn't it??

Here's the feather without pink for anyone who cares:

But don't worry, my next entry is a very tasteful straight b/w shot :)

I struggle with the PS thing, too. I really want to learn photography, but am realizing I have to learn PS for the digital world. I am sticking to open challenges for that reason more and more. I love digital art, and very often vote them very high -- but for me, I want to put my personal energies into the photography for now.

I agree, there is a place for digital art, and it really is great...sometimes even breath-taking...but is it digital photography. I like the concept of digital photos, but can't quite get my head around the PS side. I have used an SLR for years and like the results, digital is a natural step onwards. But if you all want arty farty pics, why don't you just create them from scratch in PS??

Why bother using a camera?

I am sorry if the pink clouds feather offended anyone's photographic sensibilities, but I don't see what the purpose is in going only with pictures as the come out of the camera or with only minor changes. In many instances that is perfectly fine, but it doesn't give anyone a closer connection to "real" photography. The manipulation methods are different, true, and sometimes the results are "tacky", but that's the way it goes, in film and in digital photography.

If someone else would have submitted the pink clouds feather I probably would have voted it not too high, as it looks tacky to me too - but then, sometimes I like tacky :)

"arty farty" ??? I'll take the arty part :)
You know, that's a concept for a challenge, "Wind", we'd get a lot of arty farty picts that way.

Thanks, Wolfie. It helps my perspective a little today. I hope folks understand that I love digital art and envy the talent it takes to use it well - I just want more photo than software in my photos. I sometimes feel discouraged that I will never be great at PhotoShop, let alone photography. But I think I am happiest when I concentrate on the photography. The software part I need to tackle less agressively or I get stressed - then it is no longer fun. And I am just in this for my own satisfaction at the end of the day.

As the author of the psychedelic pink clouds, remember, I live in BC now, he, he, he ...

The pink clouds were an experiment that I didn't think was going to go anywhere, but here it is on front page. I was experimenting with splitting images to RGB channels, then adjusting histograms in the individual channels, then reglueing them back together. In this case I used only the red and blue channels when reglueing. My daughter and I were doing this together, and she liked the pink clouds (IT'S HER FAULT :)))) We worked levels to get the feather to look warmer (it was rather grey).

AND - I NEVER PHOTOSHOP! I'm a PSP user :) I also have Corel software, but I usually stick to PSP.

And something else, even though I live in BC, pink RGB channel clouds are about as close as I will probably ever come to a psychedelic trip :)

--------

Seriously. It seems to me that just because a picture does not look "photoshopped" doesn't mean that it hasn't been extensively manipulated in PS. The pink clouds picture is not that far from the original (outside of the stupid colours).

Ursula

Apparently your daughter has a good eye considering your picture took home second place! :D
