Ok, here I go again...tempted by the Oly lens sale ($200 off many lenses if you buy a camera).
The Sony A6000 didn't work out for me unfortunately. I am not thrilled about going back to 16MB but that seems my only option left for a mirrorless kit without going full frame (which would mean bigger lenses).
I already have a Pany G5. Picture quality seems pretty good, but really I have not used it much because 1) I am not thrilled with the control system and I only have the kit lens and the 100-300 lens. I bought the 14-140, but never tried it (returned it unopened since someone told me it would be replaced soon, and it was soft). Getting an Oly instead means built in VR and I can then use smaller lenses.
I've heard complaints about the Oly's having noise in skies even at base ISO. That worries me a bit, since Nik and other processing software I use seems to amplify noise. But I like that the cameras are so configurable.
Also unfortunately, I can't just buy the camera and decide...I have to buy all the lenses I want at the same time to get the discounts. Which Amazon was very good about when I returned all the Sony gear. But I hate to do it again to them if I don't find the camera acceptable. We do have two local stores which don't carry much, but I guess I could go see if they have the Oly's and try them out.
But please chime in with your opinion of the Oly E-M10. I could do the E-M1 instead, though more expensive, and the shutter shock problem worries me. But it looks like a very nice body.
If I don't go with the Oly, that only leaves the Fuji. But the point is to try and downsize what I carry on vacations (where I do actually do serious photography). The Fuji seems like a great camera, though I am not sure how small the kit will be since it's APS-C and unlike Sony, they don't seem to be into lens miniaturization.
Here's what I would buy to start (and it adds up!)
E-M10 body
Oly 12-40 F2.8
Oly 14-140mm
Oly 9-18mm
would also consider the 35-100 F2.8
and to complete the kit, I already have the Panny 100-300 and 14-42mm kit lens.
With the $600 discount, that's about $2600 after tax.
I should add that I quite like the EVFs I've used so far. The A6000 EVF and the G5 seem good to me.
Do you have an Oly M43 camera? What do you think of the IQ? Handlng? Etc.
Do you think it would be a major downgrade in image quality from my current D7100 travel kit (Sigma 10-20, Nikon 18-200, Nikon Fisheye)?

I love my E-M5 but I've been using Oly for a while now.
Is the 45mm lens on the list? If so, you need that one. The image quality is excellent! |

Neil,
One thing that I keep seeing in these threads is that you are never happy with what you buy when you go away from your DSLR kit. There may be something to that. And something that you aren't going to get the quality that you want from that. I don't know how much you have spent(and lost) in this process, but to me it seems you are trying to get DSLR quality in something other than a DSLR. I'm not sure you are going to do that. I hope for you that you do, however at some point you may have to realize I did, that you just have higher standards then lesser cameras can provide.

The shutter shock on the E-M1 has been addressed with a rom update.
I haven't seen it in mine at all.
I haven't tried the e-M10, but I am very happy with the E-M5 and E-M1.
The Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 and the 35-100mm f2.8 are outstanding lenses. I also use the Leica 25mm f1.4 when ever I can.
Oly now has a 12-40 f2.8 that's getting good reviews. |

Actually, I love my RX100. But as a pocketable camera it has limits. I accept those, but they inspire me to look for a small camera that breaks out of those limits.
I want wider angle, fisheye, and some telephoto. And a viewfinder. These aren't complaints about the RX100...it's works exceptionally well for the constraints that I accept.
The A6000 would have been an outstanding camera, and may be. I may have had a defective one, for all I know. But I chose not to get stuck selling the lenses if the second instance was bad, so I returned everything. 24MP, Zeiss lens options, very fast autofocus, generally good controls. Very affordable. In the end, the one month "trial" only cost me about $50.
The Oly's are tempting because they are small and the lenses are small and many. But it's still a pretty big investment (and switching to a new "system" which results in lots of expensive lens purchases means I need it to work well for me in the long term.)
People rave about the Fuji picture quality and the excellent viewfinder in the XT-1. It's also weather sealed, though the weather sealed lenses haven't arrived yet. I've seen some incredible examples of Fuji output, but I've also seen cases of "detail smearing"...and I actually think Fuji somehow is doing noise reduction on in-camera RAWs.
Somewhere out there, there's a smaller system camera for me. My D7100 kit isn't huge, but it's not the best picture quality either especially compared to my D600. The A7 or A7R may be the next best option. The A7R is a D800 with a smaller body (and somewhat smaller lenses). Though the lenses I need aren't there yet (the 10-18 works, but other than that, there's no superwide option).
I may just try the new FZ1000 instead as a general purpose travel camera. It's not too expensive for what you get, and at worst, it could end up being a great camera for my bike rides (one of which is a 7 day trip in Nova Scotia coming up...another impetus to buy a small and great camera that's not 10+ lbs of gear.

I come from the Oly DSLRs (E-510 and E-30) I began using the E-M5 when it was released and when I tried the E-M1 it was love at first sight! I've used the E-M10 as well and it performs great, great image quality and a lot of extras that makes this a sweet camera. |

I've been using the Olympus 17mm 1.8 for about a month. Hard to beat for size, performance, and build quality. I highly recommend taking a look if you move towards Olympus.
The 5 axis IS on the Olympus micro 4/3 cameras is terrific. Because these cameras are lighter and smaller than DSLRs this is important.
Good luck in your search.
