good day. i just joined up with DPC, having bought a D70 a few weeks ago. Figured I'd start posting some of my early results...
This is a shot I took last weekend of the John Hancock tower here in Boston. It was a gorgeous day, about 5pm.
Details:
Shot from the roof of an adjacent parking garage. Used a circular polarizer. Post-processing with Photoshop. I fooled around with the blue levels, sharpened and cropped. I think that was it. The original is nearly as intense as the end result thanks to the lovely day and the polarizer.
f/3.5; 1/640sec; 18mm focal length. Used my D70 and the "kit" lens. Exposure comp and white balance were left alone. I *think* I had it on ISO 200.

I do like the Hancock building. You've got gorgeous reflections of the clouds and sky there. I like the drastic angle - makes you feel like you neck is really craning up to see it. Reminds me about my polarizer - I haven't used it in too too long. I like the line of dark buildings at the bottom - really grounds the image.
nice work - looking forward to seeing more of your pictures.

Beautiful picture. I think it would have really well in the mirrors challenge. I'm not crazy about the angle though. Looks kinda like the building is falling backwards IMO. I really like the reflection though, with all that blue and white. I know nothing about dodging and burning, but if you could get rid of the AC units on the building in the forground, I think it would be more appealing overall. |

I love the extreme angle, but then, as you can see from my thumbnails, that's what I like to do. I really love your shot and the cloud reflections are fabulous. I just think the blue sky is just a tad too harsh, but I'd be interested to see what it looks like printed out, to see if a CMYK printer could replicate that color. It's really a nice shot, though! Congrats!!

That's a very nice shot. But, I think the blue is a little over the top. I think it was a good idea to emphasize the blue, and just a bit less saturation may have been even better. I really like the angle, and the composition too.

Really great cloud reflections and I like the composition. IMO, maybe over-polarized just a touch. Great job. |

thanks guys. yes, I think I went too psychedelically far with the blue, too. but it being my favorite color, i couldn't let it go. ;)
I tried to bring it back to reality a bit here:

thanks again for all the suggestions

Anna wow, those are great building shots. I love those angles. I'm gonna check out your others.
I did another one of the same tower here - shooting straight up the face of it:

Probably also too blue, but I thought it funky. |

I love that one, too, Anthony!! I just love shots from right under the buildings. I especially like it because you've got a landscape-sized picture, which isn't typical for these types of shots. I like the blue in that one, though-- I don't think it overpowers quite like the other one, probably because it takes up less of the photo.
Thanks for the compliments. I don't have a lot of those shots-- I feel like I'm tempting fate by wandering in Downtown Dallas and Fort Worth shooting pics of buildings... I've heard the horror stories. :)
Keep posting your shots, I like your style!
