warning: the following is mostly waffle, but would appreciate any thoughts and anyone who can keep up with what i'm saying.

Right, i think this is what i will be doing possibly in the next three or so months (this depends on getting a healthy-ish profit after selling the flat). fingers crossed, i'll have about a $1700 budget to do this:

10D body, imported from the US, $1300

now lenses is where i need the help. If i got a
Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC and 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Two Lens Kit , would I be happy? it would leave about 150 bucks for a spare battery and a bag, so financially they make sense. but i don't know why these two would come as a pair - what makes them ideally suited as a twin-pack?

mostly i like taking portraits (well the missus, too scared to ask anyone else) and landscapes, cars, buildings and urban things generally.

i won't need a macro lens (i intend to liberate dads as he's never used his, hence the resolute canon purchase plan), just a couple of handy reliable lens's for day to day pictures.

i am also at a loss as to the numbering - i know f numbers mean depths of field. my compact does f2.8 to f8.0. from the lens description, am i right in thinking that slr lens's are more limited? i like using a shallow DOF, can this be done effectively with either lens described above? i suspect the 55-200 means zooming - i think my current lens on the compact zooms 3x - do any of the above improve on that? does 55-200 mean almost 4x? and if so, why don't they just say that??

also, anyone knows a REALLY good glossary for the types of lens's out there. there are so many types, and i have no idea what's good.

or should i just go "pah!" and get a 300d with the normally cursed 18-55 EFS?

help!

The f-Number refers to Aperture, which then affects DOF. I believe it has to do with the maximum aperture (large opening = smaller f-Number = faster shutter speed possible) capability at each end of the zoom range. The first lens can open to f/3.5 at 18mm focal length, but can only achieve f/5.6 at 55mm. The two lenses seem to cover the entire range from 18-200mm except for the span between 50-55 -- bummer if you need to shoot at exactly a 52mm focal length!
