I know it is counter to all we've been told about landscapes but I think this could be a fun bit of experimentation. Take a landscape photo with a thin depth of field. Advanced editing.

I might have to finally succumb to the purchase of a lensbaby - I have been holding out for so long on the grounds that I really don't need one....

If you were on the states, You could have my Spark for $50. I have found that it just doesn't suit my photography style.

extra rule, no added blur.

I agree. The challenge is to do this in camera, but not under the minimal rule set.

Leaving it wide open for domination by the few of us who have WA Tilt/shift lenses :-)

True, but despite the fact that I have neither TS nor lensbaby, I would still like to try this without resorting to photoshopping in the blur. It would be a challenge, and it would further my photographic skills.

So is there any more support for this challenge idea? My challenge ideas usually go over like lead balloons but this one seems to have at least a modicum of support.

I'd like to see more examples of what people consider "shallow DOF landscape". If you use a near focal point, e.g., say some wildflowers, and all else is OOF, is that really still a landscape?

David Muench (my landscape idol) uses near focal point, POI, and the landscape as a backdrop...but it's not shallow DOF.

I'd be more likely to use somme OOF nearby flowers or branches to frame in in-focus distant landscape. Or maybe try to get a really shallow DOF in the mid-range area, simulating the tilt-shift (or "fake miniature") look.

+1 great idea, I love landscape photography..

However, I have no idea what a shallow DOF means.. I will have to learn and start studying up what settings I need to achieve this..

If this doesn't end up to be a part of the challenge, is it possible to make it a side challenge for it?
