Nikon Coolpix 8700

I am and "up and coming" macro photographer with a coolpix 8700. I really like coolpix macro capabilitys, but I want to improve my shots... I'm thinking an external flash would be a step in the right direction, but have no idea where to start. Any ideas? there are alot of speedlights compatible with the camera.
