I bought my Canon 7D last September.

For the past couple of months I've been having focus issues. Mostly "searching" - it just won't focus when the contrast is low. I notice it mostly with macro, zoom on birds and most recently when I am shooting icebergs. But it can also happen with "regular" sots and I've noticed it with all of my lenses, so it isn't a lens problem.

I swear if I am not facing north on a sunny day it won't focus half the time. It just searches and searches.

Switching over to manual focus is not feasible, especially for moving birds (plus, I don't trust my eyesight since I now need reading glasses so I would imagine if I used manual focus all my macro pics would be out of focus).

I am going to send it back to Canon for warranty repair, hopefully they can fix it.

I did some Googling and found that others have the same problem. The suggested a "hard reset" which I did, but that didn't solve the problem. Today I was ready to throw the camera in the ocean when it wouldn't focus on an iceberg!!!

Just wondering if anyone else with a Canon 7D has/had this problem and was it fixed?

I assume you tried different lenses? I'm recently having problems with my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS - it's making buzzing noises like it's trying to focus - even when I am not pressing the shutter. I also get "Can't communicate with Lens" Errors. I've cleaned the contacts and tried reseating it a few times, but to no avail. I am going to have to send it in for repair unless anyone has any ideas.

Other things to check on your 7D - does it flake out in servo AF mode or any AF mode?

It happens with all my lenses. I am not getting any error messages. I've only tried the "one shot" option, not servo.

Yeah, sounds like you'll need to send the 7D in. Still under warranty so you're lucky there. My 24-105L on the other hand... :(

FYI- I just sent my 24-105L in for communication error repair last October. The cost was $300, and the turnaround time was only 2 days.

Thanks Shannon. The 2 days is good, but $300 is nearly half it's resale value. :(
