I've been researching DSLR's for my christmas present to myself and I ran across what seems to be an Incredible camera. Has anyone heard of the new Sigma SD9. Here is a sample image, and its stunning, sample 1, SD9 Gallery. The only drawback to this camera is that you Must shoot in raw mode and convert to JPG after its on your HD. Most pro's choose to shoot in raw mode anyway, I've heard. I would be interested in hearing opinions on this. Thanks!

Actually the SD9 is a couple of years old. There's an SD10 which came out about a year ago.
You can check the reviews here.

Do a search under Photographer profiles in the community menu. Enter 'Sigma' where it says camera and you'll get a list of registered users/members who have either the SD9 or SD10.

The biggest difference is that it's about the only camera using the Foveon sensor chip, which is supposed to be "better" than the more common CCD or CMOS chips, but I guess it is (so far) too expensive for the other camera-makers to license.

I liked the Sigmas and seriously considered buying one. I chose the 10d because the color of the SD9/SD10 sensors seemed a bit more washed out than that of the Canon sensors. I know the SD9 didn't do too well in low light, the SD10 is supposed to be a bit better.
The other reason was that Canon seems to have more experience in the digital camera market (they aren't going anywhere soon), I like some of the Canon lenses better, and it'd be easier to switch to a pro-grade body (EOS1D) in the future and keep all the same lenses. |
