Yea me again, new thread.
A photographer was beaming about lack-luster performance of digital cameras in composing portraits when it struck me oddly - photography terms. What made me giggle on the other end of the line was him spouting over the phone the phrase "..now, when you're taking a family out in the field to shoot them - " and well, he lost me after that. With hand cupped over mouth to withhold uproarious laughter, I thought of my own dialogue.
Question being: what terms do other photographers use when conversing with photographers alike, and does this change when engaging with non-photographers?

depth of field becomes "amount in focus" with non photographers
macro becomes "close up"
telephoto becomes "big lens" lol

I mostly talk in technical terms with everybody, often forgetting that not everyone knows what I am talking about. But the look on their faces (non-photographers) usally makes me correct myself and speak in a more generic manner. |

Well, when speaking with my wife...
"Lens" becomes "lifelong investment".
"Digital SLR" becomes "better camera".
"dpchallenge.com" becomes "that photography website".
"golden hour" becomes "your turn to do the dishes".

I am more possessive when I discuss it with my husband; DPC becomes My Site. He knows which site is meant!!! |

There is pic, picture, photo, snap and then there are images and photographs.
