Pentax has released a press release about their new *ist DS, a budget oriented DSLR in the same vein as the Canon EOS 300D.. a baby brother of the *ist D.

This is great news for someone like me.. who will probably be on an extremely tight budget for a long time.. who already has some Pentax glass not seeing any use, and who can now afford to start saving for a Pentax DSLR to use the lenses with! I'm so excited! Look out for the springtime.. you're probably going to be seeing a new DSLR user in these 'ere parts!
(And no replies with "That camera is going to suck" or "You're better off with the 300D.", alright? If you want negativity, search for it elsewhere kthanksbye.

SD card...ouch. I don't see any mention of a price range. Did anyone catch that?

Did DPReview say what crop factor it had? Didn't see it...

Hope you get your camera soon, Glen. :-D

I guess you can "make do" with your S7000 in the meantime. ;-)

Looks like a very nice camera. I went for the 300D for the same reason, having cannon glass lying around. Its the best thing I ever did.

The reveiw said it would be priced similar to the 300D, which in the UK is about £600 - £700. (worth every penny) as I'm sure the Pentax will be. I bet you can't wait!!

Oooohhh. nearly tempted to beg for one for my 30th birthday. then i saw the one painful bummer - Scandisk only. i have a lovely 1Gb MD card that appeals to the lazy sod in me... but then two 512mb SD cards probably wouldn't cost more than a 100 quid, so i guiess i could adjust...

3200 iso sounds cool!

it's also quite a beautiful camera, the new pentax, though i'm not sure i'm overtly keen on its smallness - is it more or less flash being so tiny?

i was tempted when the first one came out as a wish-list type item, but price was VERY prohibitive... this new one is very tempting... hmmm...

I believe I read it's a 1.5x crop factor.

Pentax is coming out with the *ist DS and Olympus is coming out shortly with their Evolt to compete with the Drebel. This is very good news for the consumer and they are both priced to be around $900-$1000. This is very good news for the consumer and will hopefully make for some price drops by the time the Christmas shopping season roles around.

In addition, FujiFilm is coming out with their S3 Pro to compete with the D70 and Canon 20D. Minolta-Konica should be coming out with their DSLR soon as well. Going to be an exciting time for the consumer.

The fact that it will run on SD cards...will offset any savings made ofver a 300d.

Sounds grainy to me...

Puting unused lenses back into action is a very good reason to lean toward a brand.

I wonder how much the sales of the *ist, and it's forthcoming jr bro, would improve if Pentax gave them a name people could say? Seems like a marketing blunder to me.

Keep in mind this is still vaporware. Camera manufacturers have been known to pull pre-production models based on initial response to retool some features. I'll be pretty surprised if Pentax doesn't pull the DS and add CF/SD before it hits full production.

assuming they are compatible, I say yes... but they rarely are.

the s3 is really not a d70/20d competitor, it's a bit higher than that, it's more of an entry-level or mid-level pro body, IMO.

this new pentax offering should be cool ! i just saw a *istD for the first time sunday, there was a woman using it at the park in Boston. this is definitely good news for the beginner dSLR market (like myself, and others like me).

The Minolta DSLR is the one I'm waiting for... how can you argue with a camera that has Image Stabilisation built into the body, so that EVERY lens you buy will have IS? I own a Minolta 35mm SLR, and the lenses are top notch... many pros agree they are very underrated. The film SLR that the new DSLR is based on is a very fine camera indeed, I'll be very happy with that feature-set.

Funny how negativity and reality are often unjustly overlapped.

Not just in the camera world either.

And this whole love with ISO is lost on me..someone care to explain - legitimately - how to use any ISO over 400 without have tons of grain?
09/14/2004 05:31:43 PM · #18
For reasonably sized prints (half or quarter magazine page, or 7x5, even up to 10x8), I tend to find noise at ISO 800, and even sometimes ISO 1600, pretty acceptable.

It's all about application.. For model or wedding photography clearly high ISO is bad, but for sports photography high ISO in some cases is essential, because otherwise you just don't get sharp shots.

Edit: Correct grammar

Reality is that the 300D may be a better camera for some people.. and that some people truly do feel that a certain camera is a bad camera..

negativity would be someone coming in to a forum where someone else is obviously happy about something, and purposely putting what they're excited about down, for no other reason than because they can.. that's all I was trying to avoid by stating what I did.
