I'm trying to create a new area (canvas) on my picture and for the life of me it's not working. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I even pulled up a different picture and it was active there...but not on the one that I want to put the border on...
I have PsCC.
I pull up the Canvas Size, choose my size border I want. But the Choose Color is gray/inactive...I can not choose black, gray, white or other...I've tried looking all over and went to the help section...
Now I'm here to consult with the masters... |

Do you have an Adjustment Layer as the active layer? That can sometimes deactivate certain things. |

General beat me...
Having a pixel layer active might make it work. |

If you don't have a 'background layer' active when you increase canvas size, you can't access the colour options. It doesn't matter however, as you can just create a new layer beneath your image layers and then fill it with the colour of your choice. |

As far as I can tell the layer I'm working on is active... |

Is the layer you are working on an adjustment layer? |

not to sound stupid or anything...but I'm not sure what you mean...as far as I know...(which isn't much) I created a "clean" layer...control/alt/shift & E |

If you don't know what an Adjustment Layer is, you should definitely learn -- it's the basic technique for applying adjustments (e.g. Curves, Levels) non-destructively, so you can change them later without having affected the original pixels. |

Ok, that I understand and yes, each time I do something I create another layer (or NIK will). I will do multiple "clean" layers to do brightness/curves etc. I haven't ever taken any classes so I don't actually know what all these things are...scary huh |

Janine:
Create a new blank layer
Move it to the bottom of your layer stack
Select that layer
Go -
Layer > New > Background from Layer
You should then be able to do your canvas size adjustments with the ability to select the colour. |

I had problems when I opened this picture and had to shut down my programs and burp them (they had been on to long). So I didn't have a background layer for my first layer...I had the background copy above a Layer 0... |

So that was a learning curve for me....I used to have Elements and did borders all the time and since having the PsCC I just haven't had the need to do any borders of late. So learning that the very first layer must be a Background Layer not a Layer 0 (which was created when I turned off the program...not sure why yet...but I will find out) was key in all this. Once I did Pam's steps of recreating the Background Layer...it was active (canvas sizing).
Thank you for your help last night...
And Paul...I now "know" what an Adjustment Layer is...I knew before but didn't ever use the term (this is what happens when you are self-taught...by me...lol)...I will although explore more of those articles about Adjustment Layers. |

Well... SOMEBODY was teaching you about adjustment layers in New Hampshire last fall, now wasn't he? |

Yes, you did and I knew before...but panicked when I was directly asked if "I knew what they were"...it's soooo intimidating to know something yet not know it...if you get my drift. And I'm sure you remember the "deer in the headlights look I got/errr get" |
