Oprah had to know this would happen...

Yup I agree with the initial page of posts. Of course companies will donate BIG time to Oprah - her marketing power and brand are a force to be reckoned with. To be a realist, the only part of her we see is the 'positive' image what evil she could do with that power.

She does some amazing things through her Angel Network..but the woman is worth 1+ Billion USD .... I don't know where I'm going with this. I'm just suspicious.

If that's true, big deal, sell the car and pay the taxes - you'd still be left with about $10,000 of free money.

I was told that Pontiac can't keep that car in showrooms now becuase of demand.

This is true of any winner of any prize. Just look at the official rules of any sweepstakes. In this case it looks like Harpo Productions paid most of the local taxes, which is more than most do.

I know this is true of any winner of any prize...in the United States.

I still thought it was interesting.

The Paradoxical Commandments

People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered. Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest persons with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest persons with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

People really need help, but may attack you if you do help them. Help them anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

I wonder how much emergency relief this would have bought for Haiti...

Probably a lot. But why would Pontiac spend its advertising dollars bailing out other countries as opposed to having a large advertising campaign to promote their new vehicle line?

It is so easy to bash Oprah because of the big way she promotes her largesse on her show.
But this is just a small part of what she does. Not much known is what her foundation does.

The Oprah Winfrey Foundation is doing a lot of good things to support women,
children and families especially in the field of education
in the US and around the world directly or indirectly.
Her foundation awards grants to countless of organizations that carry similar vision -
just google Oprah Winfrey Foundation - and you'll see many organizations that have received grants.

She has donated over $50 M to organizations including An Ounce of Prevention (early childhood),
A Better Chance (developing leaders among young people of color) and local (Chicago) organizations
such as the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Children's Memorial Hospital and the Chicago Academy of the
Arts. And then as some posters said here, she has started in a big way, her activities in Africa.

The Oprah Winfrey Foundation's tax records are public, you can go to fdncenter.org and search for
their latest IRS filing. In 2002, their assets were worth about $47 M with total giving of $7.4 M.

There's also an Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation that has total assets of $12.4 M and total giving
of $4.1 M in 2002.

I am not connected to Oprah or an Oprah apologist. Chicagoans are fascinated by this wonderful individual and of course, many, just like here, are also critical of some of the things she does or doesn't.

Oh I wasn't bashing...just pondering aloud. If I got a million bucks falling from the sky...I might not be so, altruistic as I'd want to be.

flip89, I wanted to commend you on your well-researched post. There's nothing more satisfying than reading an educated opinion.

I don't mean to bash, either. I hope I don't come across that way.

No, I didn't mean specifically you, but a lot of people including people here in Chicago. The Pontiac giveaway, for example, was a topic in the column of Roeper (or Ebert and Roeper) in Sun Times for two days especially when the car winners found out that there is no free lunch - Pontiac is paying for sales tax but the winners are responsible for paying state and federal income taxes - which for a $28,000 car would amount to something like $5,000 - $6,000 - plus change for state taxes as that 28k income would effectively boost the winner to the next tax bracket. Some winners said they have to take out a car loan :-). There was a husband and wife team in the show - who said that they may have to sell the second car to pay for the taxes !

Thanks. I didn't mean specifically any person here, but a lot of people are - and that is why this topic is so fascinating for me.

The Harpo Productions building for example, from what I learned is located in a (then) depressed area of Chicago - and because she put her show in the area - this stimulated business activity and development of the area. But then, I have heard people critical of the show because, they say, not much of the audience go around to patronize shops except maybe for coffee or something ... they just zip in and out. Same thing with guests, they say, they just fly them in and then out after the show. But then, people were distressed when she bought that mansion in California and as I recall, there was news that she was selling her farm in Indiana - because the move may mean that she's leaving Chicago and the city will lose her etc. etc. She's one of the big donors to Chicago's new Millennium Park (see my #10 entry to the Mirror challenge). It's so much fun following her!

personally i respect the person more whose working everyday for 30,000 - 40,000 a year at the oprah winfrey foundation than i do oprah for starting it. it's great that she uses her power and influence for positive things but i believe people in her position have a responsibility to do that.
