Oprah donates millions of dollars annually to a wide variety of charities around the world. If she wants to have a huge-ratings show and give people extravagant things, fine by me! It's those ratings that have enabled her to contribute at the level she does.

She IS building schools in underdeveloped nations. Heck, she went to Africa last year and gave thousands of kids Christmas! They got things like tennis shoes & new backpacks, toys, clothes, etc.

Sorry, but I"m cycnical as well.

Well, maybe these 50,000 African children appreciated her kindness. Oprah does do other off-camera things. You just don't always hear/see them because THEY'RE NOT ON TV.

Sorry, but the cynicism gets to me. She does good things. People love her and appreciate her.

Go ahead and start calling people names... I'm a lot of things, but ignorant, I am not.

Yes, and that makes it all better. I'm not ignorant, nor am I an illiterate idiot. I find it sad that people can't see good in others just because they're in the media.

Let's see...

It's more like jealousy! Seriously, you can judge her because you don't have the funds she has. Well...you have a descent camera, right? Why didn't you give that money to someone who needs food?

FYI she is a billionare. I'd love to see how much she ACTUALLY donated to the African children. Notice how she donates shoes, backpacks and such, and not actual money etc?

I'm not trying to say she's a bad person, she obviously isn't. I just don't think she should be praised for donating other companies items. I just don't see her as doing anything worthwhile to help those who need it the MOST. Most importantly when she is in a position to do so, I think we can all agree on that.

That's the exact reason we shouldn't take them seriously... Do you remember how her goddess the divine OPRAH started out? She was showing the same crap as Jerry Springer, Sally Jesse and all the rest of the daytime talk shows. Am I supposed to simply overlook that because now she exploits the needy?

A probably better way of explaining than I am doing...

Why didn't you?

I bought my camera to hopefully become a successful photographer who can make a living at it. I'm so far under the poverty level it's not even funny, I will make $9,000 this year. I don't have money for myself let alone to give away.

But, besides that fact I help out a single mother I know, by donating money when she needs that, or more often giving her kids some of my old toys, books, things I enjoyed when I was there age. Is it a lot? No. But it makes their life easier, more enjoyable, and I enjoy their companionship as well.

Do I want to be praised for it? Definately not. I only bring it up out of necessity after your 'challenge'.

...and BECAUSE she's in the media, she helps to bring awareness to some of the ills of society so that not only she, but others can help and donate money (or do whatever can be done). How would you know about poverty in Africa and injustices in our world if the media didn't report it to you? Just because she has money doesn't mean it's her sole responsibility to give it all away and fix all the badness in the world.

Whoa.. how judgemental is that statement. So I take it you personally know each the millions of people who watch her show and have first hand knowledge of their ignorance? You must, otherwise that would be a pretty ignorant statement you made there.

She' brings awareness to it because it brings in ratings (spelled m o n e y in HER pocket) and for no other reason. I would know about poverty in Africa because I read and watch REAL reality television (Discovery, TLC, FoxNews, History). And if you understood my previous post, you would realize that she got a good chunk of her money FROM the 'badness in the world'...

Oh and if this was in the Rant section where it belongs, I never would have seen it and DONATED my two cents worth...

They wouldn't be complaining if one of them won a hummer, now would they?
