another phish to be wary of is an email to you from a friend (someone you really know) with a simple subject, like "Interesting article!" or "This is cool!" or something similar, and nothing but a link.

unless you check the address to make sure it's not a spoof, you will surely wind up in a world of hurt.

sadly, more and more of these look like their being emailed from your friend's cell phone.

and they are sent with you as the only recipient, making them look less and less like a spammy phish.

i really hate for my friends who've had the phone contact list compromised. and unfortunately, there are a handful of them who are members here.

You better believe it. I've learned the hard way not to open a link from anyone, even family members, unless the "form" of the email is clearly "theirs". You can pretty well tell if someone you *know* actually sent a particular mail just by looking for what I think of as "idiosyncratic identifiers". You know the kind: Betty-Sue always strings thoughts with dots...if you catch my drift...? And Jason always starts his mails with a "Hola, amigo!" That kind of stuff...

I did lookup of the phone number and it was a magic jack number :)

First I did search on igcall.net for the number where the call came from and for carrier it has mentioned "YMAX Communications Corp." and when you did search for this company it takes you Magic jack website.

Thanks. My reason for asking is I am constantly getting calls from out of state on my cell phone, which I usually don't answer, and just add them to my reject list. Sometimes I will call them back and get a reply of " this is not a working number" How did they do that?

This is called spoofing meaning that they call you from a number X but they spoof the number to Y so when you receive it at your end, it shows called id as "Y" and when you call them back it says no number found because that number Y is not valid. do google and you will get all details. I remember sometime back someone wrote an iphone app so spoof the caller id and later on apple had to block the app not sure what happened after that :)

This is an outrage! Prince Franco of the Court of Anaheim has no jurisdiction over me, Artimus Roflmao, Emperor of Roflmaoville! This "Prince Franco" shall witness the presence of my sword! Tonight my armies shall descend upon the Kingdom of Anaheim and lay waste to it all. (yes, even Disneyland!)

But first, to open the royal zip file attached to the summons...

There has been a phone scam around here similar to that lately. They call you, verify your name then inform you that there is an outstanding warrant for your arrest, but you can take care of it over the phone if you provide them with certain information. . .

LEAs recommend hanging up on them, then calling locally to see if you are truly wanted.

one key thing to do is to always inspect the "from" address; don't ever assume the sender is who they say they are...

You'd be surprised. I work these days as a 911 operator/LE dispatcher, and I got a call the other day from a party who was concerned that they had received a phone call stating the company was advised by the local police that they (homeowner) were recommended to install a home security system.

Thankfully the party knew better and alerted us, but I wonder how many folks they suckered in...
