The original of this photo just wasn't very interesting, but I loved the stare of this Sumatran Tiger, so I went to work in Photoshop (actually employing Virtual Photographer) and came up with this:

I like the end result... but wonder what others think. I was actually going to make this a fine art print, and have pictured it in a black weathered frame with double white matting. Thoughts, critiques, suggestions welcomed and appreciated!

The BW high key affect seems to work well, however the focus seems to be a bit soft. The contrast could probably be boosted slightly as the tiger's head blends with the background a bit too much on the left. The softness might be only due to downsizing for the web.

You know how sometimes you see an image that you really like but you can't quite put your finger on why? For me, this is one of those images. Must be the mood it evokes or something. A good example of a photograph that works despite technical flaws. Thanks for sharing :-)

I had one idea, If it is the stare that captures you, I would crop in way closer, so that just the face shows. For me that would remove a lot of the distracting elements of the shot. (the background, and the fact that looking down at the tiger)

Thanks for the input!

The softness was actually added in post processing... it seems viewing it in this thread it looks slightly softer than when I look at it on pbase.

digistoune - I know exactly what you mean and it's partly the reason I posted here looking for some feedback. It's not something I've ever done before in post processing and I have been looking at this photo for a couple weeks now trying to pinpoint exactly why I like it so much... still no luck.

Thanks for the input about cropping closer, I'll try that as well.
