Curious to know what people's feelings are about the steam shots that are here. I'm in two minds at the moment ...
09/13/2004 04:20:20 AM · #2
I dunno.. I think if they are creative and some effort was put into them, they deserve a chance. After all, steam might not be "smoke".. but for some people, it could be the only alternative they had. (sensitivity to smoke, et al).

I won't be voting on the smoke challenge though (since I didn't enter it, and want to concentrate on the mirrors challenge, and not have to stretch myself too thin).. so take what I say with that in mind :)

I have mixed feelings about it, but I decided to just vote without paying attention to what exactly the foggy bits consist of. I'm wondering if people might think mine is steam, though it's not. If not, then they must just really hate mine :) Then again, it is over-processed. :)

I wouldn't even try. You will be commented of the planet and the score will reflect that. Unfortunately ppl here talk about photography as ART but take things too literally and distroy any artistic attempts :( Take a shot of something smoking and dodge and burn the crap out of the sky and you will win a ribbon.

Oh, I haven't submitted a shot of steam, don't worry. Others have, and I can't presently make up my mind how to vote on them ...

My thought on the matter is... If you replace the steam with smoke would it make a difference? If it's a shower shot or steaming kettle by all means mark them down. Does that help?

I hope people will also keep in mind that what might logically appear to be steam is not necessarily. I didn't realize until after I entered mine that people might think it was steam because it's not normally a place/item/container/whatever that would hold or release smoke. I hope people are voting it down because they don't like it, and not because they think it's steam... if that's the case.. how awful! I worked really hard getting smoke to work for it, and it's going to suck if it's only getting clobbered because people are assuming it's steam.

That's sort of like the ones that people vote down assuming they're fake, rather than voting normally and requesting a DQ - except that there is no during-challenge verification for an instance such as this.

I just had a quick look through and there are no photos that deserve to be maked down. But that's just me. I suggest you just vote on all of them as they are smoke. I am sure we all know the difference between smoke and steam.

Smoke.
"A suspension of fine solid or liquid particles in a gaseous medium."

Is steam not just a certain type of smoke anyway?

I don't have a photo of steam,

but I've gotton several comments from people who don't understand what they are looking at.

maybe a title that says exactly what it is next time?

All I know is that it's nice to come into work in the morning and see the opening votes sitting just a hair over 6 for once!

I was blown away when I saw the opening score for my travel photo and I was even more blown away when I saw that it was 1 away from the brown ribbon!

Maybe this is the start of a new era...I hope!

Ahhh ha... So your one of the 2 I topped! Seriously it was a very tough challenge.

On the other side I have not voted yet just had a quick look so I have not put a DQ request in on that photo.

Steam is an actual gas, and so can't be a "particle suspended in a gaseous medium." It is also completely transparent. What you think you see when you see "steam" is condensed water vapor.

Despite that definition, I think most people think of smoke as the particulate byproduct of combustion; steam is the product of a change-of-state reaction, but no chemical change occurs.

You left out key elements of the quote. Steam is a suspension of liquid particles in a gaseous medium (that's what makes it visible). The material emitted from a SMOKE MACHINE looks like steam, but it's NOT water vapor. Since I can't know what the actual material is, I'm inclined to give the benefit of the doubt. Surely we have better things to worry about than whether the smoke is an approved type.

well...some people have an additional challenge they could be focused on, rather than disecting semantics...

Smoke machines are dry ice, or carbon dioxide
