also is it legal to use adjustment layers and the eraser tools in conjunction?

Question 1:
IMO, yes. Even the use of a "wild" gradient involving several colors can be approximated with curves, and curves is always valid. Be aware though, that if you depart very far from a photographic look, the voters will "have their way" with you.
Question 2:
There is no limit on the use of adjustment layers or selection tools (e.g. eraser on adjustment layer mask) in advanced editing. The one qualifier to this is if you use these tools (or any others for that matter) to remove or duplicate major elements of the photo. |
