I scan thru 500px at odd times and they have a heavily cropped set of images in their "flow" - a grab bag of images that may be based on something about my viewing habits or not.... It's occurring more and more that I love the heavily cropped image but the full image disappoints - especially the portrait oriented images.

Anyone else noticed this? or am I just crazy (ok different question I know)?

I know I tend to be anti portrait mode even for people where I prefer the landscape shape for some reason but the cropping has crept up on me somehow. I wonder if it's just a trend that I had not noticed before or something that I just like.... might start playing around that in my images.

Anyway.... Thoughts??

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by heavily cropped. Are you saying these are a very small portion of a much larger image, or are you talking about portrait vs. landscape orientation of an image?

It's like when you're working in photoshop and you zoom in to fix an area, and this extreme crop looks killer, but when you go back to full frame it just doesn't have that impact? So you try CROPPING it that way, but most of the time that doesn't work either, heavily cropped needs to have bigger-than-800 images to work mostly, I donno.

Anyway, 500px shows us square-cropped segments of larger images as thumbs instead of full-image thumbs like we do here. And many times the cropped thumbs are MUCH more interesting than the full image...

Yeah.. although in the flow it's more rectangular but same as the square crops in the list.... I just find it interesting that the crops are more interesting in some cases..... and just got me to thinking what was behind that... Maybe we should pay more attention to the cropping and outside of the 3:2 ratio we all see thru the viewfinder...... just musing I guess :-)

Scratch the port/land thing... Just me adding confusion. Yes - I mean that 500px takes a small portion of the image.... and in a number of cases those tiny portions are more interesting than the actual image. I'm just wondering why that is... and just maybe.. if I should be playing with it in my images.

I believe the politically correct term is big boned or heavy set or something... Thanks for that image - has me wondering which eye to scratch out :-)

Can't. Be. Un. Seen!!!

Ah, yes. It's a good exercise to zoom into our subject. I think it is ubique who is always encouraging us to "not show everything".

Still one of my top-scoring images ...
"Searching for Signs of Intelligent Life" and the original frame from which I extracted my entry.
