I know that the longer I'm here, the more I study and shoot, and the more care I take, that I actually use less post-processing than I have in the past.

The rules really aren't that difficult to follow. Great images occur all the time here that don't need to be hammered around 'til they no longer represent the original file any more.

It's nice to get a terrific score, and/or ribbon, but the enjoyment of trying to be creative within the parameters of a challenge theme, a ruleset, and a timeframe makes us all better at this delightful art form. If *you* are getting the image that you wanted and intended to capture, putting some personal touches on it in post, and are happy with the end result, then a score from that point isn't really the point. Some of my images that I like best and am most happy with did not necessarily score that well. But *I* was totally happy with them, and couldn't care less how they did in a challenge.
I really think this place teaches anyone who stays around for a while and truly works at developing the photographer they are. They do so, and with good results. One year into it for me if you'd have told me that I'd have ribbons, a couple 7+ scores, and am comfortable and competent with my camera, I would have said that you were nuts.
I'm not too shabby.....I can accomplish what I set out to do with my photography and get pleasing and competent photographs. And it's because I've learned an awful lot here....

That calls to mind something about polishing a turd.......(Ducks & runs.......LOL!!!)

Please do think that I dislike anything post processed as that is far from the truth. I was just trying to say that I think there is a place and time for the more' fantasy' type stuff and it seems like the site is leaning more towards that line of late. I agree that we need more of a mixture in the challenges which includes minimal editing. It gives more options.

So, why do we constantly insist on making up NEW rule sets or changing the existing. Is there not enough option to create something you as a photographer enjoy without always having to tweak the existing rules?? Therein is the challenge. This discussion comes up roughly every 6 months, I swear. :)
LOL at Jeb's last comment! :P

I think Don has this one right Paul.
No one may be required to over-edit, but I am driven to place well, and in order to do that I feel that I need to perform to the standard expected in each challenge. So, if I enter an Expert challenge, I really feel that I should make full use of the toolset to create the best image I can within those constraints. The same is true for Minimal challenges, I feel a strong need to be VERY VERY conscious of my shooting and all the small details when actually capturing the image.
There's good logic behind running a fair mix of all styles. (Even if I do think Expert has gone too far into fantasy :D )
