OK I bought a new Compaq computer in late June. I noticed that the DVD reader does not work properly, so I called HP so it could be fixed. They told me that I had to complete system restore first, and if that did not fix it, that then they would arrange for someone to come out. Well I thought that was really stupid because its a hardware problem not software, but because they refused to send me a replacement part I had no choice.
Anyway today I finally did the restore after backing up my photos and files.
Compaq computers automatically come with Norton Internet Security 2003, but once that had expired I upgraded to the 2004 version. But when I did the restore it saved 2003 files over the 2004 ones and completely stuffed up the software. Norton will not let me reinstall it though, because of problems with the registry.
I also lost my internet access to the computer.
I am at a huge loss here. I have no clue what to do or how to fix this. The computer was running beautifully before this with the exception of the dvd drive hardware problem.
Its totally f&^*ed up now though. I have tried to uninstall things, and reinstall things and that doesn't work. I have tried restoring to earlier versions, but that doesn't work (I can only resore as far aback as the recovery). I really do not know what to do here.
I lost my job the day after I bought the computer, so I don't have any money to actually pay to get it fixed and the thing is I should have had too. I knew that the restore was wrong, but they said the only way they would replace my part is if I tried that first. What else could I do?
I am really upset about this, and just have no clue what to do.

Best thing to do would be to ring up HP and bitch, bitch, bitch. But in a nice way. :-)

I would and probably will. There is just one small problem though. I went for a job last week with them and in that department, I will probably find out tmr if I got it lol Talk about ironic huh? I think I might see if I get the job first and then decide.
The thing is, because they have stuffed up my third part programs, they will not take responsibility for that. maybe I should talk to Norton even, since its their software. They are a pain in the butt. I think they put such tight restrictions on their software to stop people illegally stealing it that, they can also screw around the real customers.

OK forget talking to Norton. I went to the support section of their site and everything is automated. You put in key words and a list of things come up that you are supposed to tick. Not one of them ever related to what I need.
By the way the internet is back. I had started off with it, and when Irestored to a earlier version from today, it came back. I think some how the Norton thing killed it.

I'll help with norton later. As long as we can get the rest to work in the meantime, I know what is causing your Norton plm AND how to fix it.

Really? I have spent the last 4+ hours trying to fix it (plus a few hours before dinner). I have managed to kind of reinstall it, but its not working almost at all. I have to go into my computer, and then into norton and click on a file to get it to do a scan. (which I am doing now) And thats is only anti virus, the rest of Norton isn't working and I can't change any of the options.
Start menu doesnt work. I can click on things but they don't open. Actually its making even msn messanger take forever to open up. Even though that is supposed to open at start up, its not doing it. I have to press on it a few times, before it will even respond.
I think I need to reuninstall it though. My computer is just running so much slower, and things are not working the way they should. (like messenger as just mentioned)
I got this error before //service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2003102116101006?OpenDocument&src=_mi&product=NAV&version=10.0&language=english&module=3023&error=5&build=STANDARD
And the stupid thing is, all of my settings were already correct.
Thank you so much Matt if you do understand what is happening. I am stressing majorly over this.

Can't you just undo the system restore? If you used Windows XP to do it you can.

How? Actually I think I know what you are talking about. I did undo somethings, which got be back online.
However I did a different type of restore to the one that is in System tools. Its a compaq restore that resets your computer to the way you bought it. Once you do that, you can't go backwards I don't think. I tried.
Thanks though.

I've never done it myself but it says in system restore:
"Any changes that System Restore makes to your computer are completely reversable."
I imagine once you've done the system restore, an option will come up in the application to undo changes made?

Thats what I mean though, there are two different types of resoration and this one is different. I actually did use the one you are talking about before though. It came in handy when I made things worse and lost the internt. I went back to the start, but then later decided I didnt need to go back that far, so chose a different restore point. That raelly is a great technology.
The system restore that HP made me do though, was the XP equiv of a format. Yet it kind of keeps your files, while restoring the older ones. I am not really sure how it works, it might be a Compaq/HP thing.

When something like this happens to me I check the device manager to see if there is a exclamation or question mark beside the problem, if so I just remove it and restart the computer, letting windows reload the driver.
I had problem like this before but some how my cd and my reader for my camera had the same drive letter both were D
so I went and renamed one of them E and that took care of it. (Just a thought) |
