I submitted a shot for the smoke challenge. I used the info my camera provided (HP 945), then I checked Picture Information Extractor (PIE) which I am evaluating now. The info on the sutter speed was different. My camera said 1/180 and PIE said 1/195. Is it very important that this info is correct? Should I trust my camera or PIE? I guess I won't be purchasing this product if it's not acurate. Thanks for any help you can give me on this. Ray |

For myself I often take multiple shot of the same image in order to be sure to have at least one good photography. Working that way it's just too easy to submit one image with the EXIF of the next picture. I did that once or twice.

I find that EXIF extraction programs tend to be more exact. Programs like Windows Photo and Fax viewer (what I use) rounds up shutter and or aperture to numbers that are standard to cameras. I personally think it better (for learning purposes) to round the numbers to what can be acheive manually on a camera.
Let's say you have uploaded a really cool pic that I want to achieve similar results exposure wise, You have filled in the Shutter/Aperture acurately. I can not set my camera to a shutter of 1/195 sec., I will have to pick 1/180 or 1/200 any ways to achieve similar results as yours.
I don't think rounding is a bad thing. My cam in Programmed AE mode produces some weird shutter speeds, 1/1006 Sec. and 1/67 sec. are a couple I can remember. |

Really like the idea of 1/1006th sec. :-)
My travel guide shot was taken at 1/58: the discovery of that phenomenon is why I shoot most of my non-macro work in a modified automatic mode. Especially given the very limited range of shutter speeds the Nikon gives you in Manual.

in short, you dont have to be dead on accurate with that info. in fact you dont even have to submit the info altho it's always nice to do so.

Thank you all. I thought the info was required, it's nice to know it's not. I thought, with my luck, I'd win a ribbon and then be DQ'ed for not having the right info (like I have to worry about winning a ribbon, LOL!). Thanks for your help. :) |
