What exactly do they do? I don't see the point. |

They shade the lens from glare from a light source in front of the camera. More tech savvie people will be able to give a more technically savvie reply. |

Light from extreme angles can cause lens flare and other effects so the "hood" stops the light at those angles.

A lens hood also provides protection from impact. A UV filter is OK, but you can easily ruin the filter and possibly damage the front element of the lens if you bang against something and the filter cracks. The hood protects the front of the lens from light impact, from flying objects (you know what I speak of if you have young kids), and from those few light raindrops we tend to shoot in occasionally.
That's in addition to the flare protection. If you use a UV filter on the lens, a hood is even more important, since a filter can worsen flare & reflection. |
