Host, Leo Koach
[/center]

FocusPoint: Alessandro Petrini from Montesilvano, Italy is a great artist who does have a wild imagination.
FocusPoint: Here are just a few links to his ribbon winning photos, which they all great and deserve to be there.
FocusPoint: Starting from my favorite //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1066725
FocusPoint: //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1096190
FocusPoint: His lovely son //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1058173
FocusPoint: ...and something out of this world! //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1069702
FocusPoint: Please feel free to click on any of the images and check them out... it opens a different tab
Alexkc: thanks Leo for this interview :)
FocusPoint: I will start the questions now, so we can finish it quick, and go on with floor discussions
FocusPoint: thanks for showing up :)
Alexkc: ok
Alexkc: I'm ready
FocusPoint: After all, you're one of the most admired photographers in DPC
FocusPoint: What's your profession in Italy? and how long?
Alexkc: I'm a filmmaker and photographer
Alexkc: I always worked more with videos even if what I like most is photography
Alexkc: first I started in a Television
Alexkc: and then as a freelance
Alexkc: I've been working in this for 10 years now
FocusPoint: that's a long time... nice
FocusPoint: Tells us little about where you live and work
Alexkc: yep
Alexkc: I live in a wonderful region in the center of Italy
Alexkc: weather is nice and food even more
Alexkc: and we have amazing landscapes, above all mountains
Alexkc: but we have 200kms of coastline and I live very close to the sea (but mountains at 1 hour driving)
FocusPoint: You are one of the lucky ones who live in a place, subjects are endless, such as this place //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1073598
FocusPoint: For you, is there any preferred style of photography?
Alexkc: I love every kind of photography, but landscape and outdoor portraits are my favorite
FocusPoint: your portraits are really amazing...
Alexkc: also artworks starting from my photography is a field I like very much
Alexkc: thanks Leo :)
FocusPoint: What does inspire you?
Alexkc: everything, I am a person who likes to explore everything. I like very much novels (I'm a great reader), movies, theater and music
Alexkc: I have played in several rock bands
FocusPoint: Guitar?
Alexkc: yes, guitar
FocusPoint: I am a drummer myself. I know how to make noise with some plastic buckets... :)
Alexkc: my son loves drums, I'm sure he will be a drummer when he grows up!
FocusPoint: There is an interesting photo which print also available for it... tell us more about it //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=972123 ... where was it taken, who actually took it and who are those people?
Alexkc: after two years and a half I still can say that this is my favorite photo of mine
Alexkc: I took it in front of this place:
Alexkc: //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=978585
FocusPoint: another great one from the master :)
Alexkc: these are guys I recruited on Facebook, friends, friends of my friends, relatives, wife etc.
Alexkc: and after the shot (taken at dawn) we went for a breakfast
FocusPoint: who took the shot, tripod?
Alexkc: I had had that shot in mind for months
Alexkc: it was me
Alexkc: I was not part of the shot
Alexkc: I let them having their feet wet :)
FocusPoint: who is your favorite photographer or photographers?
Alexkc: hard question, I love so many of them that choosing one is almost impossible. But every time I think of that, Steve Mc Curry comes to my mind
Alexkc: he can put together beautiful and meaningful photos at the same time
FocusPoint: We'll just get to know him more I bet, after you mentioned it here...
FocusPoint: If you had all the money in the world, an open check, but you can only use it for photography equipment, list us your dream gear... and why?
Alexkc: but I like very much other photographers (Salgado is another one) and many photographers who are also digital artists like Michal Karcz or Sarolta Ban
Bear_Music: //stevemccurry.com/
Alexkc: I'm pretty humble about gear, I'd like to have all I need, but I'm not one of those who absolutely want the 'impossible lens'. I'd spend that money for travelling around the world and take photograph with the gear I already have :)
Alexkc: of course, if you have a 135 f/2, I'd thank you :)
FocusPoint: so, D80 is it!
Alexkc: I think some gear can be very important though
FocusPoint: no 1Dx, D1x DDx, 11Dx, xxD1x or anything along the way?
Alexkc: if I could buy a camera I'd like to have a D4
FocusPoint: me too
Alexkc: most of us (except Canon guys - never trust them ^_-)
FocusPoint: but I have to sell my body for that, which worth about 5 cents these days
FocusPoint: With this photo, I had to ask //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1085039 are you related to gyaban?
Alexkc: I can say that Christophe is one of the best digital artists in the world IMO. I asked him advice several times. He's a very clever and kind man
Alexkc: I love his works
Alexkc: but more, him as a person
FocusPoint: Do you have any published photo books, or websites that you showcase your photos?
Alexkc: my website is under co0nstruction, but I can write it here (soon will be ready): www.alessandropetrini.com
FocusPoint: you know... we can't wait
Alexkc: I don't photo-books published yet, but soon I'll have one with a photo editor, I'm very excited about that
FocusPoint: busy with projects... that's cool... you let us know, we'll buy the book, I guarantee you...
Alexkc: :)
FocusPoint: Last question... do you think my website, www.true-awards.com is a good idea? (Yes, I had to plug that in here)... and did yo know people who don't vote there lose their tires every night until they do?
FocusPoint: answer that to the floor...
Alexkc: it's a great idea! Everyone appreciates your efforts Leo. And all the people out there have to vote. I heard that you can come during people's nightmares, don't you?
GeneralE: How many countries/continents are represented in that user list?!
pamb: Alex, you said your "Running in the Rain" shot would be part of a series. Have you continued or completed the series?
Alexkc: unfortunately not yet, even if the shots are planned, so I'll sure have the 4 of them during this year
Alexkc: this was a lucky shot, a photo agency contacted me to work with them after seeing that photo
Alexkc: we surely have three continents Paul :)
Bear_Music: and an island in the middle of the pacific
Cuttooth: and an island in the pacific
pamb: couple of islands too!
Cuttooth: oh..hah
Bear_Music: betaya to it :-)
Alexkc: LOL
FocusPoint: now, if we can get someone from ISS...
GeneralE: Thanks for staying up late!
Alexkc: but Mark is not that far, I met him in person :)
Bear_Music: alex, what's your absolute favorite Italian meal?
Alexkc: pizza and gelato
Alexkc: I can't live without them
Bear_Music: urrrrgh....
Alexkc: and pasta of course
vawendy: what flavor gelato?
FocusPoint: ok that was my cue... I feel hungry now
Alexkc: stracciatella :)
Cuttooth: Alex, any travel plans coming up?
Bear_Music: I was hoping to hear some local specialty that would surprise me LOL
Alexkc: Robert, here we have a lot special dishes
the_rkp: arrosticini? :P
Alexkc: Pasta alla Mugnaia for instance, everyone is invited here :)
Alexkc: the_rkp, did I mention it?
Alexkc: Mark I hope I can travel to Lofoten Islands for a reportage at the end of February
FocusPoint: brb... got to eat something!
Alexkc: the_rkp is a spy, I meant to say
Alexkc: I need a gelato now
the_rkp: Yes I am... :)
tome: is that your wife?
Alexkc: nope
tome: :)
the_rkp: me? :O
Alexkc: he's a friend of mine
Alexkc: and a DPC user, of course
Bear_Music: Runty Kid Photographer?
Cuttooth: I want to add that Alex is an incredibly nice guy in person and showed took the time to show us around Rome. Thank you!
Alexkc: my pleasure Mark, a great day together
Bear_Music: hey Alex, you'll show US around Riome for one day?
Alexkc: of course
tome: How's the photography/video business in Montesilvano?
Alexkc: live at 200kms from there
Alexkc: 2 hours driving
Bear_Music: We'll be there for 1 day in Late April 2015
gord: may i ask a question in chat or pass it on too you?
Bear_Music: ask away
GeneralE: dang, I'm trying to plan for next weekend!
Alexkc: business is the worst thing in Italy at the moment, but I have an interesting project that could improve everything soon, so keep your fingers crossed
gord: Hi Alex where do you get the creativity for your images?
Alexkc: Robert, no doubt we'll meet there!
Bear_Music: we are doing a cruise from Istanbul to Barcelona to celebrate our 70th birthdays
Alexkc: I get inspiration from everything. I guess movies and literature are my main source
Cuttooth: Alex, I know you were trying to organize a get together in your area. Will you try organizing one again?
Alexkc: cool Robert! :)
Alexkc: if people are interested, yes, why not
tome: I'm interested
Alexkc: ok, +1
Alexkc: :)
vawendy: And the host pays for all the tickets, right? :)
hajeka: So am I
Alexkc: +2
Cuttooth: hmm...maybe a get together in late April 2015 ;)
Alexkc: well, it could work
Bear_Music: haha
Bear_Music: hang on
Alexkc: I heard some guys from the SC will be there in late April :p
Cuttooth: gotta be on our best behavior then.
Alexkc: as for the inspiration, I love to search for images on the net
Alexkc: of course :D
GeneralE: I want to see a picture of you all in paper party hats!
Alexkc: me or Robert?
GeneralE: all of you, and the GTG
Alexkc: :D
FocusPoint: *next week "vawendy" scheduled if I am not mistaken fyio*
Alexkc: we love to have fun in Italy, so no problems at all!
Bear_Music: Naples, Rome, Tusdcany 27th, 28th, 29th
Alexkc: that's great!
Cuttooth: Alex, any DPC goals for the 20144?
FocusPoint: I may have to find a chick to interview her
tome: those are some long term goals, Mark :)
Bear_Music: haha!
vawendy: Find someone who's really interesting, so that one half of the interview is interesting. :)
Cuttooth: lol..yeah, drop the last 4 ;)
FocusPoint: I allready found one
Bear_Music: INTERVIEW WENDY, LEO!
Alexkc: you are teh second person who asked me that: not sure if I'll set. I don't what I can ask to my DPC life. So for now I want to use DPC, as usual, as my source of main inspiration
FocusPoint: grahamgator
grahamgator: Hi all; just now getting here.
Alexkc: hi!
FocusPoint: grahamgator, next week as we planned (wink win) you interview wendy
vawendy: dead silence...
grahamgator: Did I miss something?? I am not very interesting nor a good interviewer, just a lurker, lol.
FocusPoint: then you guys lurkaway and we watch you
Bear_Music: You can't fool ME, Wendy, I know what a chatterbox you are!
vawendy: I didn't say that I didn't have a lot to say -- just that it's not interesting. :P
FocusPoint: I'll put my paper party hat
FocusPoint: paint in pink
grahamgator: I really would like to know how to take better bird shots. I think wendy needs to do a session on bird photography and then a tutorial for DPC. How's that?
Cuttooth: //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio_edit.php?IMAGE_ID=1078835
FocusPoint: HA!
Alexkc: :D
vawendy: It's the lens. I'm definitely a case in point where it's the equipment, not the photographer.
Cuttooth: alex at trevi fountain
pamb: gee that's flattering!
Alexkc: I swear I was not drunk
vawendy: freaky on the eyes!
Cuttooth: lol
tome: he looks a bit elongated too
vawendy: Drinking will do that.
gord: the longer the better (lens i mean )..lol
Cuttooth: its the distortion from the 10-22 :)
Alexkc: yes, we ate a lot, but I'm thinner than that :D
tome: it's the pasta, I knew it
Alexkc: a lot of spaghetti for Mark and Toby
vawendy: Ok -- but the most important question -- why can't I eat bread in the beginning of the meal? When I was in Italy, they served bread right away, and they looked horrified when I took a piece before the meal!
Alexkc: LOL
tome: in greece they EXPECT you to eat the bread :)
FocusPoint: actually they probably shocked, how come an American starting with the bread...
Alexkc: many Italians do that, especially during weddings
the_rkp: who did that? I always do that :D
vawendy: I was told that the bread was for the end -- to sop things up.
Bear_Music: yup
FocusPoint: hmmm. I thought wine was for that
Alexkc: the problems is that we tend to have separate dishes and when you eat something in a different moment people think you are out of your mind
the_rkp: nooooooo bread is good for all the moments ^_^
Cuttooth: I agree
Alexkc: I agree too
vawendy: yup -- one of the Italians I was with was horrified by our thanksgiving. She couldn't believe everything was served all at once, eat for a short period of time and be done.
vawendy: Ok -- now I want some tartufo
Alexkc: in Italy lunch and dinner are very important moments, especially in the south
Bear_Music: totally agree with hat
pamb: Love all the photography related questions in here! ;)
Bear_Music: serve dishes in sequence is great
Cuttooth: lol
Alexkc: hahahahah
Bear_Music: hey ALEX: what's the difference between f/8 and f/22?
vawendy: ok -- photography question -- can you send me a picture of tartufo? :)
gord: have you done a lot of food photography then.. lol
grahamgator: I experienced the same in France. It seemed to take a long time to get through a meal.
pamb: Ha!
Alexkc: f/8 is when you are young, at f/22 I guess you can get married
pamb: Lol
tome: yeah alex, let's see some food photography!
tome: good answer
vawendy: What do you use for lighting?
Alexkc: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203237710449858&set=a.1055269268265.2010522.1421835807&type=1&theater
FocusPoint: //www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203237710449858&set=a.1055269268265.2010522.1421835807&type=1&theater
Alexkc: I have 2 studio flashes and 3 speedlights with triggers
vawendy: do you use one type more than the other?
gord: how large are the flashes are they continues or strob
Alexkc: for studio photos I tend to use studio flashes with their softbox, but when I need a more directional light I prefer speedlights with snoot
vawendy: did you buy a snoot or make one?
Alexkc: 70cm x 50cm
Alexkc: I almost never use continuous light in studio (but of course there are exception - as for my Girl with a pearl earring photo)
FocusPoint: Ambaker: everything you missed at the "Chat History" link at the bottom of this window
vawendy: That was an awesome photo!!!!
tome: I was going to ask about that particular photo
Alexkc: I made mine (also a friend of mine a couple of them for me - now I have kind of shapes for that!)
Cuttooth: yep, incredible shot.
vawendy: What did you make it out of?
Alexkc: I used light from window, I tried to recreate the same light used by Vermeer
Ambaker: That's what happens when you are on the road crossing time zones.
Alexkc: studied the making of that painting
gord: hmm that link wont open for me :(
Alexkc: I like dutch painters
tome: for me that's one of your best
Alexkc: Wendy, out of snoots?
Alexkc: most people like that one Tome
vawendy: I do too -- what processing do you use to emulate? I find myself using the cross processing on color efex, sometimes I get what I want, most times I don't.
tome: //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1066725
vawendy: (yup, what did you make the snoots out of? I've tried tin foil, but I need a better option.
tome: here she is
gord: thaks tome :)
Alexkc: Most of my workflow is in Camera Raw, especially in the last 6 months. Photoshop is for the final (but often is very important) touch
gord: I like that grain effext in the image :)
Alexkc: mine are black
Alexkc: I worked a lot on the kind of grain
Alexkc: after all, it was 'grain' challenge :)
vawendy: whoa... most in camera RAW? I'm obviously missing a lot, I do very little there.
Alexkc: last version is stunning
Alexkc: of course I'm talking of regular photos, otherwise I spend days with artworks :)
Alexkc: everything in PS
tome: so you do selective editing also in camera raw?
Alexkc: if they are not for very small areas, yes
tome: interesting
Alexkc: so I can have an almost perfect file for PS
vawendy: I was late to the game, so someone might have already asked this: Do you have a favorite picture on DPC? (someone else's photo...)
pamb: you confused me there Alex
gord: So alex if you work with you image in raw does that keep alot of detail in the image or your ust able too do more with it?
Alexkc: thanks for the question Wendy! My favorite authors are from Iceland
pamb: do you use selective editing in raw when there are only small areas to selectively edit?
Alexkc: Lallisig, Heida and above all skarpi_xxx
Alexkc: no, I use photoshop if there are small areas Pam
Alexkc: but if they are only local adjustments I can use Camera Raw
Alexkc: oh, and some of De Sousa images
Alexkc: but I love so many photos on DPC
Alexkc: hard to say just one
tome: does Andrea have his own camera?
Alexkc: this one inspired in some way Dawn of the Dead:
Alexkc: //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=911952
vawendy: awesome shot! I don't remember having seen that one before.
Alexkc: a toy one, but not a real one yet, too young I guess (especially because I likes to throw everything!!!)
Alexkc: I love northern landscapes
FocusPoint: Ok, I am stopping the recorder now, and leaving the room, because I have to get some sleep... Alex sir, thanks for showing up again, keep up the good work :) we're a re waiting for the website and the book... well, at least I am. Transcript will be ready tonight (Arizona time) we had 16 people at once, and the whole world basically... which is the fun part. nothing chatting face to face, eating spaghetti at the same time! Next week, girls talk... guys shut up! then food fight starts!
FocusPoint: again
gord: Was there a lot of editing work in this image looked like it took some time //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1096190
Alexkc: thanks Leo!
