This morning as I was taking my kids to school my dog began to bark violently. Knowing that this is uncharacteristic of him I lookout my front door. To my surprise there was a 4.5 to 5.0 foot cottonmouth water moccasin. I watched in awe as my dog stood in front of him barking and the snake striking at him 3 or 4 times. Finally my dog backed off and the snake slithered though the fence and under a side utility room of my house where is at now. My dog goes under there trying to get him but comes out unsuccessful. I called animal control they came out but could not get him because they would not go under the side room (the room is about 8' x 25' and 2' off the ground). I don't blame the man for not going under there. When he seen the snake he backed away and said there was nothing he could do. Any suggestions, I have 2 children and don't want them to stumble upon this snake. This is the first time I have seen a snake in my yard (next to my house) in the six years I have lived here. He is very aggressive and will not give up his ground. What makes it so bad; I was startled so that I didn't even think of getting my camera out and taking a few quick shots. I was only about 10 foot away from the snake (sideways) when he and my dog were going at it.

Thank God my dog is ok - he is an 11-year-old lab. I live in the middle of the city, not many trees but I do have a golf course across the street with a branch of running water. Does anyone with suggestions on how to get this snake away from here? I don't like snakes; I have had to many encounters with them over the years while fishing.

Depends how much food there is for him around your home, but if it's not abundant he'll soon move away.

... in a few weeks time... : )

Call me crazy but I think Animal Control should have tried a little harder.

We have had an abundance of water frogs and lizards this year because of all the rain. In the evening time I can easily see a dozen or so frogs around the house.

I think so too. But you should of seen his eyes when he got up off the ground after looking under the room.

time to get the shotgun out. use a low power 2-3/4" load with the smallest lead shot and use the most open choke barrel you can get. get a light under there and shoot through the access door.

The tiny lead shot will not penetrate the floor or foundation of the house at reasonable distances, but it will kill the snake.

They also have these little shot filled shells for .22's if you have a .22 pistol, that might be another route. I believe they were designed for dispatching snakes.

I found this link:

Getting rid of snakes

The Friendly Answer

Get a cat! We own 3 cats, which live mostly outside. They do a terrific job of keeping mice and other rodents (snake food) away from the house and yard. And the kids adore having pets!

Sprinkle Mothballs

Sprinkle mothballs around where the snakes are and they will go away. I had them here in my yard near out deck and this method worked. Just be careful with mothballs and children!

Where I live we have a chain of stores called "Do It Yourself Pest Control." They sell things to get rid of wasps, moles, and ... snakes. Suggest you call them if they are near you. They will have advice, first, and then possibly something to try.

One word - mongoose!

Then keep it as a pet ;-)

Get a kingsnake. They'll eat the cottonmouth and are non-venomous.

Or better yet, do like and get yourself a whacking stick.

Homer: Well, Marge, should I whack slow, or fast?
Marge: Slow, then fast. (Laughs)

Liquid Nitrogen (if you can get it) or, in a pinch, a fire extinguisher. You can reduce the body tempurature or the quality of the surrounding air enough that it hibernates, then carefully pull it out with a pool hook or other pole. Toss it in a garbage can and dispose of somewhere where it won't bother you.

I'd move. Simple as that. lol.
I hit a 4 foot ish snake in the road awhile back and got the major creeps. It was blue, no clue what it was. Was told maybe a blue racer, but I have no clue. It's dead now, whatever it was.
And that being said. I have to go to work now. Where I work with snakes allll day long. lol
I hate the things and have to work with them all day. What a world I live in.

Good ideas here for you. Some things to try anyway. Depending on where you live, shooting it might get you in trouble. The cat (or mongoose :-) ) sounds like a good possibility. Also, you might try calling your local police. I've seen them deal with snakes on cops. hehehe. If they try to direct you to Animal control, explain to them you did and what happened. Or, call animal control back, talk to a supervisor, maybe the person who came out was just a little nervous about the snake, perhaps they have sommeone who knows how to deal with snakes that could come out.

Invite it to dinner, and politely ask it to leave?? Problem solved!
Or...if its a male.....dress like a female snake, and seduce it. Yanno, wine it and dine it....then tell him that ya never wanna see him again! That'll do it too!
