I know there is a "suggestion" link somewhere in Andromeda galaxy that no one hears or speaks... but, I ask you... if you had the control over DPC, if you know how to code and make changes to DPC website... and if you had opportunity to advertise DPC, where would you go and do it?
I urge SCs NOT to lock this thread, and just hear what others will say about it and how long they would say about it.
Let me start with myself,
I would change the color scheme a little, not too much... just to give that "WOW, it's different now" reaction.
I would make front page images bit larger, and somewhere at front page, I would also include HMs.
I would definitely have a chat room, an official one, accessible through a link at front page.
I would create a shop, DPC stuff sold for people to wear or drink coffees etc.
I would bring back the league, 4 times a year... and never stop it.
I would send weekly monthly news letters to my members, and registered users about the contests, what's new etc. (not the automated one there is one right now)
I would advertise on all my social websites, and give commission to people who are bringing people, like one year free membership if you bring 5 of your friends signed up (as members)
I would have once a month, none-ribbon-winners challenge... and I mean it.
I would have twice a year masters challenge, only with 10 or more ribbons.
I have more but that should do it for now. They all are simple and doable ideas, which could pump our blood bit more faster when we sign in the next time.

I like a lot of your ideas but this one seems the best for management! Win/Win situation.

+1 to everything Leo said above. I think the store is a good way to show pride in our site and boost revenue. In addition we have to do some advertising and get this name out there more.
In addition may I throw the following thoughts out there:
* VIDEO - via Skype web cam's and have DPC interviews on video. For those being interviewed that don't want that then a written interview is fine.
* VIDEO - video roundtable discussions about a specific subject that can include up to a half dozen participates, (again via web cam's) and a moderator. These could be at least monthly. Get people involved, let them take their membership to a higher level. Let's have some fun people.
* MORE LEARNING - there is soooo much knowledge here. Let's share it more often. Let folks who want to teach teach and those of us that want to learn learn. Again VIDEO can be utilized for specific presentations as well as written text.
* EQUIPMENT REVIEWS - collectively all of us own just about every camera or lens under the sun. Offer the opportunity for members to write an honest review of their equipment. Folks can differ on opinions if there are multiple reviews of the same equipment. That's good. That'll just stir up more forum talk and that's good too.
* TIPS & TRICKS section - we all have these little special things we do that make our photography life easier or produce better results. Let's have a section to share them.
* DOWNLOADABLE/PRINTABLE CERTIFICATES for our top (3) - their choice to take it or leave it.
*CLASSIFIED AD SECTION - I know we do this through the forum but how about a separate classified add section with tag words that allow non-member surfers out there in internet land to come upon one of our ad's then visit us. Let's draw folks to us.
* BLOG - anything that is about the DPC and the community. Let the members contribute as much or as often as they like. Make them a part of it. Make it fun. They can even submit things about their personal life if they feel inclined. Of course we'll need moderators prior to post to ensure that guidelines are met.
* AD's - banner ad's (only on select pages, like maybe the home page & a few others) to produce revenue. If we have a B & H ad or an Adorama ad for example then members can click the ad and place their order from the DPC web ad and generate money for the DPC.
* NEWSLETTERS - (expanding on what Leo already said)It takes time to put together weekly/monthly newsletters but how about routine newsletters that are sent out to the entire member base highlighting key points that week. For example challenges coming up, who won last week, equipment review etc. etc. This task can be rotated amongst a group of volunteers. Here's the thing. Those of us that are here on a daily basis will know all this. So what, let them receive it anyways however, those friends/members, (or past members if we still have their email), that we haven't heard from in a long time will keep getting our newsletter and may, just may be reminded or prompted to come back and participate. They can always unsubscribe. Let's get in front of these dormant folks. When a salesman wants to quickly expand their sales the first thing they do is try to sell more to their existing customer base. Same principal.
*ORGANIZED REGIONAL PHOTO WALKS - lets try to get a group of us together in a given region and do a leisurely two hour photo walk. Great way to make friends and have a nice day out.
Just some thoughts for now. Thank you for asking Leo.

Obviously I would start with an "Art wins a ribbon every week" algorithm
- I would use Geotracking technology to randomly assign drone attacks to voters who click a 1 on any of my entries.
- I would fire the SC and enlist a group of "Enforcers" (I'd keep GeneralE if he cleans out the fridge in the SC lounge)
- I would charge an entry fee for all challenges and use the proceeds to buy beer for me & the Enforcers.
- All challenge entries will have to be animated GIFs
- I would recruit Slippy & Leroy back to the site.
- There'd be a monthly "Free Godzilla" challenge
- No more ability to ignore the Rant forum, and everyone would be required to give a religious or political opinion when they join up
- Personal attacks would still be against the rules, except by the Enforcers
- I would drive a flying jet car (with "DPC" on the side so it's tax deductible)
I could probably think of more, but that should be enough to rally support and start the coup... |

Sounds like you're looking for feedback / ideas on building out your own "new" DPC site. ??? |

If your referring to FocusPoint then some might think you are a tad cynical :)
If your referring to Art Roflmao then sign me up as soon as the site is up!

"New DPC" website.
Advertisement Announcement for it.
Excerpt from above:
"Join when you get a chance, tell your friends and families about it, and enter your photo. The website still under construction but registration and upload is available right now, no reason to wait until fully running, which will be very soon. You have a full month before the public voting starts!"
All fine and dandy ... certainly an interesting relationship with the original DPC. |

I must be very naive but I thought that Leo was doing all those things for the better of this site! Never thought he was planning something bigger :) |

Let me be clear as much as I can be here, so there won't be any misunderstanding...
DPChat is not something new... I have tried it before, when it didn't get much attention, I gave up from all... for a long while.
You will have to search FocusPoint to find all the dirty stuff about me here, in the posts, and check my suggestions out before I started any websites... whatever I am doing there, pretty much I suggested for the DPChallenge. Larger images at front page, jury challenges, contests only for none ribbon winners, a chat room... etc.
With 3 months each contest to start with (I already mentioned why here) and giving TWO FREE DPChallenge memberships, along with DPC HAT awards starting with February Free study (read here) it's hardly starting my own "big thing".
Do you know what's all about? Since DPChallenge is not entertaining me enough; so, because I do have the knowledge to do all those things, I am entertaining myself, and along the way, helping DPChalenge.
I do have time now... I am trying to do things more interesting and enjoyable. I know it's not easy for some of you to see "someone" is doing they wish they had here at DPC, but it's a FACT that administration here does NOT care... period. and I don't have DPChalenge code, I couldn't do anything with it anyways, since it is written in php, not asp!
However, think what you want. I have NOT put any affords to pull any people to my website more than I am trying for DPChallenge. Check this post as well, and decide.

Leo doesn't need to layout a business plan or model here on DPC before he goes out and starts his own site. Give the guy a break.
Some folks find fault, some take a middle ground and few, but some, like Leo here are trying to aggressively jump start what many of you feel is a somewhat stagnant site.
I'd rather we give the guy the benefit of the doubt and give him some credit here rather than question his motives. Before you take offense. I'm not addressing DPC as a whole just those few that may wonder if Leo has the right motives.
Just my two cents.

I'm going to try to word this very carefully, to stay true to my new year's resolution.
Leo has been active here for a long, long time. He is the guy who has given out DPC hats (with Langdon's permission), to help encourage participation here.
This year he is giving out more hats here, and memberships to DPC. Seems to me that someone with ulterior motives would not hand out paid memberships for the competition.
In the past, when there some complained about a lack of a feature here, or there, they were admonished to start their own site if they thought it was all that easy. So, if somenone has, then we have more opportunities than ever.
As Leo has already mentioned, DPChat is not new. If you have ever participated in one of the interviews there, you would see that it compliments DPC, more than competes. How's about we all play nice, until there is really something to argue about.

I'd make it a gambling site.
you get to see the entrants, but not their pics and then bet to win/place/show/trifecta/etc...
imagine awesome that would be. |

Good conversation to have if it stays positive and light hearted...
Some of the newer site technologies out there that I would enjoy in this community would be a "feed" on your profile page that would show newly posted work of your "friends" who you could "follow" allowing you to "like" pictures they have posted. Also the possibility of forming "groups" to feature ongoing side challenge entries in a scrolling feed style gallery would be intriguing.
Being able to "like" or use a thumbs up/thumbs down system on comments would be good to explore.
I agree with the front page revamp... color changes and a new design to get rid of the 1990's ".php do-it-yourself style content management system" type of website would be good. But function is more important than form, I suppose.
Oh and hey, might as well throw in a bigger max image size. 900 pixels on a side maybe? Storage is cheap these days after all!
