Dean Zulich's story is pretty much an American dream came true... Coming from Bosnia, from a war, finding something great, photography and become one of the most successful fashion/commercial photographer in LA... seen on TV for a season which he ran a very good challenge. He has Marie Claire magazine and Victoria's Secret in his resume...
...yet, pulled only 5 people for the interview! 5! weakest crowd for an interview ever... after all promos done here and everywhere. I know there are some regulars who couldn't make it, but there are close to 800 members, probably that much more registered users. "Couldn't make it" is not the excuse, it's because no one knew Dean, and care about the interview much! it was only 30 minutes long. People didn't even peeked in and out, nothing! it's a big slap to my face, and again, nothing against the community, it's just like I am keep slapping myself over and over again...
dpchat.net is process of combining with true-awards. From now on, all my energy and time will go there, externally. I would be happy to see some of you there entering challenges, I don't charge anything and give a lot. and only 4 times a year... yes, "artistic nudity" will stay along with "kids/babies with pets"!
Here is the interview.
DPChatQ: Hi Dean... I am very happy that you accepted my invitation, and here now to answer a few questions. I will start with some comments and later on you will be free to chat with audience as well... stay as long as you wish after our interview.
DPChatQ: I will be posting a couple of video clips at the end of this interview, which one is an intro of VH1's "The Shot"
deanzulich: ok, i do have a meeting right after
DPChatQ: Let's introduce you to our audience first...
DPChatQ: Dean Zulich is a fashion photographer from Bosnia, currently lives in LA. Dean was the runner up of VH1's "The Shot" reality television show which was created by Nigel Barker and ran only one season (unfortunately).
DPChatQ: His Joss Stone Photo from that show was published at Marie Claire magazine.
DPChatQ: Russell James, photographer for Victoria's Secret, hosted that show and one time he said "I am learning a lot from Dean" regarding Dean's lighting setups, which are pretty impressive.
DPChatQ: Some links to dean's work...

DPChatQ: //gallery.imagenomic.com/main.php?iitemId=95363
DPChatQ: //gallery.imagenomic.com/main.php?iitemId=95372
DPChatQ: Dean is one of my mentors in photography world; I do have tons of respect and admiration as well.
DPChatQ: Let's start with a none-photography question... In Wikipedia, it says you came to United States, following a girl... what happened to that girl? Who was she, if you can just briefly tell us!
deanzulich: lol, ok we dated back in Bosnia during the war, and she decided to go to US, and i followed her
deanzulich: she left a year later in 96
deanzulich: i actually just saw her couple of weeks ago in Sarajevo, we maintain friendship
deanzulich: she still lives in Sarajevo
deanzulich: Bosnia
DPChatQ: I was going to ask... That's very cool. At least she was the reason you're here, and had all that success :)
deanzulich: one of them, for sure:)
DPChatQ: First time I checked your portfolio, images I saw were pretty unique... Where are you getting your ideas from? Is there any photographer that you were inspired by for that kind of style?
deanzulich: well i always looked up to dave lachapelle, annie leibowitz, ansel adams
deanzulich: etc
deanzulich: but ideas are usually mine
deanzulich: I get them all around, watching movies, seeing performances, museums etc
deanzulich: all kinds of art
deanzulich: music
deanzulich: etc
DPChatQ: I hope many people after this interview, will check them out... I like them all.
DPChatQ: //deanzulich.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/PrintEndOFTheRoad-1200x675.jpg
DPChatQ: :water I have seen this place multiple times taken by you... some of the audience probably know where it is but I don't (I knew but forgot)... Where is this road, and is it always flooded with water like this?
deanzulich: It's outside of Index, Washington
deanzulich: its been like this since like 2007
deanzulich: but i heard they might fix it
DPChatQ: if they do, it might be a mistake... looks much better like this :)
DPChatQ: What is your favorite brand camera, and favorite lens for the quality, speed etc.? If I remember correctly, you were a Canon guy, but I might be wrong on that!
deanzulich: Canon cameras and lenses
deanzulich: 50 and 85 F1.2 are my 2 favorites
deanzulich: but i also use 24-70 a lot
deanzulich: and 70-200
deanzulich: 5 DMark III
deanzulich: 1Dx
DPChatQ: just wondering, do you remember the camera and the lens you shot Joss outside on the runway?
deanzulich: 1Ds Mark II
deanzulich: 85 F1.2
DPChatQ: Oh.... *drool* that explains the DOF there
DPChatQ: Do you use light-meter at all/often/sometimes? And do you white balance your camera with a gray-card before each photo session?
deanzulich: I don't use light meter
deanzulich: but I do try to shoot gray card
deanzulich: for a white balance sample
DPChatQ: Did you guys use gray card at the show?
deanzulich: to be honest I don't remember:(
DPChatQ: I asked in the past you probably won't remember, but, the photos coming out at the show were amazing, and you told me they are out of camera with perfect settings... Do you change (crank up) some settings in your camera to get better results?
deanzulich: I always change settings according to situation
deanzulich: lighting etc
deanzulich: Desired DOF
deanzulich: etc
DPChatQ: Contrast, sharpness?
deanzulich: nope
deanzulich: don't change that ever
DPChatQ: ok, that was my main interest..
deanzulich: I see
DPChatQ: You are traveling all over the world... I think you've been my birth country last month (Turkey)... My question is, which country (or city) inspired you the most, other than Bosnia, to take more photos of it, and why?
deanzulich: I enjoyed Ghana quite bit
deanzulich: Elmina Castle in particular, shot with lady in yellow dress
DPChatQ: I think I do remember those photos... about couple of years ago?
deanzulich: yes
DPChatQ: Have you talked to Russell after the show... did you guys have any projects together? or after the show, that was it and never spoken again?
deanzulich: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=286845456759&set=a.64582681759.101227.58951481759&type=3&theater
deanzulich: one of images from there
deanzulich: no we talked, and we still exchange text or so. I saw him in LA once too
deanzulich: he is very busy
DPChatQ: Yeap, I do remember correctly :)
DPChatQ: I heard that you were in another new reality show... but I don't have the details for it. What's all about, when it starts, if hasn't started yet! give us a brief info if you could.
deanzulich: I can't disclose yet as it is pilot for Vh1. If it gets picked up, I will make an announcement
deanzulich: it should be
DPChatQ: Ok, so we know it's on VH1 !
deanzulich: indeed
DPChatQ: DVDs? If so, where can we get them?
deanzulich: which ones?
DPChatQ: Do you have any photo books or workshop DVDs? If so, where can we get them?
DPChatQ: any
deanzulich: oh ok, so far not, but there is great webinar on my site
deanzulich: its free
DPChatQ: www.deanzulich.com ?
deanzulich: //deanzulich.com/video
deanzulich: bottom one
DPChatQ: cool.
deanzulich: //player.vimeo.com/video/50298839
DPChatQ: I know you do have workshops all over the country... is there any place we can get your scheduled workshops and their info?
DPChatQ: your site as well?
deanzulich: I will keep announcing workshops on my FB fan page
deanzulich: and my blog, that I don't quite use often
DPChatQ: I will make sure to refresh your FB page often at my pages...
DPChatQ: Is there any advice you can give to anyone who wants to shoot fashion... such as, how to start, where to go?
deanzulich: well there are a lot of things, but this is what worked for me, so please read this when you get a moment:
deanzulich: //deanzulich.blogspot.com/2011/11/how-did-i-get-here.html
deanzulich: then feel free to email me any additional questions
deanzulich: its been a crazy ride, so it is very complex question
DPChatQ: And here is my last question, again not photography related... :hawk I see you are a Broncos fan... and you have the Hawk painting on your face as "voodoo" for Seahawks to lose the game... which didn't but, I just had to ask... you think Broncos will lose next week?
deanzulich: of course. should be easier game for hawks then niners
DPChatQ: :)
deanzulich: better match up
deanzulich: or mismatch;)
DPChatQ: waiting with tons of excitement
DPChatQ: Ok, if anyone else has any other questions, floor is yours...
deanzulich: lets do it
DPChatQ: An intro video of the show... //vimeo.com/65771791
DPChatQ: A work clip of him... //vimeo.com/16279944

DPChatQ: *that's new for me*

deanzulich: graduated with honors and Best portfolio of show in 2007
deanzulich: now I am honored to be Hall of Fame Alumni
GeneralE > so what triggered that interest?

deanzulich: //deanzulich.com/portfolio/outside
deanzulich: then I decided to enroll to photo school
GeneralE > my dad used to live on the Key Peninsula, south of Gig Harbor -- I have a lot of pictures from Washington.

DPChatQ: indeed
deanzulich: Any other questions?
tolovemoon > Do you ever work with interns
deanzulich: I do here and there

GeneralE > :)

deanzulich: well thank you guys for having me, if no more questions, I will sign off, and head to my next commitment:)

Managed to read the transcript now and many thanks for it.
I am glad that there are the transcripts. I missed the interview with jagar also but was happy to find the transcript.
I seldom read all the forums and to be honest I am a bit confused by all the activity between the SC, new awards, hats â€Â¦ My fault entirely but there is that much that one can do in a day.
I truly appreciate your work and presence here. |
