Hey all

Most of us have some way of sparking your creative side. I'm somewhat reserved and introspective by nature, so I need to come out of my shell a bit to help uncork the genie. In the past I'd brew up a Bodum of strong coffee at 8pm and drink/write til whenever - like 2-4am easy - but now I'm older, and have a business to run, so uncork is the operative word here.

It's not unusual for me to have a glass of red wine (or a single big (600ml) bottle of really great craft beer) at hand as I think an idea through and bring it to life, especially in the studio. Let me state clearly that I am NOT condoning what I do, and I keep a close eye on my habit. I make sure it stays a habit and doesn't wander into the insidious territory of addiction.

There is no history of alcoholism on either side of my family, but I wonder at how my aunt didn't burn her house down. The place was a mess and she was an author and chain-smoked like a fury as she wrote. But as she often said, without smoking, she could not write.

I'm not saying by any stretch that I *HAVE* to drink prior to shooting, but a beer or glass of wine helps me relax and lowers the ol' social inhibitions. As a result I have more fun shooting studio meisterwerks for challenges when, well, slightly sozzled :-) And as opposed to knocking things over, as might be expected, I find that I am even more careful on set as I know I have been drinking. Have yet to kill a set/lens/camera in this state.

I believe Hemingway rationalized away his drinking by saying it helped him write, and many other famous writers have done similar and worse. But does anyone else here have (or had) similar habits when shooting?

Coffee before, during, after, and when I'm not even shooting.

I live in Seattle. Which explains a lot.

I've mostly quit with the caffeine and barely drink anymore, but I do enjoy a nice smoke while doing just about everything. :)

Decaf coffee or tea is a nearly constant companion in this house.

Don't smoke or drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages of any type.

But I do love me a good bowl of pasta before a big shoot.

I wouldn't have the patience, short-term memory, or hand-eye co-ordination to do anything remotely technical when sozzled.

I knew a programmer who insisted the best coding he did was when he was stoned. Had me baffled how he even remembered how to type in that state.

Alcohol? What's that?
Coffee on the other hand: before, during and after.
I've been practically raised on coffee so it doesn't affect me even late in the evening.
When I'm stuck and things don't turn out as wished, then the cigarettes enter the battlefield.
But, as I'm cutting down drastically on those since a few weeks, they're often replaced by...coffee and a few minutes of TV.

Nothing before shooting, but if there's something involving a few people - breakfast for everybody :)
