I just purchased a used Nikon D300s in 9+ condition with 4,000 actuations. I've loaded an SD card but it won't format. Regardless of whether I use the menu to do this or push the two format buttons simultaneously it won't erase the pictures on the SD card and format it. I did try another SD card and same results. Am I missing something here?

How large of an SD card did you put in it? Some older cameras have a limit on the size of SD card they can recognize and use.

Is the SD card locked?

I got my D7000 confused one time by putting a card in and out before it had time to get it up to speed. I think that it was a card not on the "ok" list though. When I put a Sandisc Ultra in it later, and formatted that card, everything was back to normal. I also would suggest seeing if the card you are using is on the "ok" list.

Matt & The MelonMusketeer are correct. I put in an approved manufacture but it was a 32GB card and they only "approve" up to a 16GB SD card.

No, Leo the card was not locked.

I'm going out to purchase the right card today and we'll see if that takes care of the problem.

Thanks for the help folks.

For what it's worth, I just tried formatting a 32GB SD card in my D300s, and it worked just fine. I assume you know how to switch formatting from CF to SD? You know you can toggle between the CF and SD cards to choose which one to format, right? Hitting format doesn't format both of them simultaneously... you only format one at a time.

Hi Alan,

Yeah I'm pretty savvy when it comes to the menu etc. So yes I did have the CF card chosen as primary when I tried to format the CF card etc.

There seem to be other problems with this used camera such as the counter not working properly. For example if I take 10 shots the counter shows that I only took 7.

Anyway I spoke with the technical department of Roberts Camera in Ft. Lauderdale, FL where I purchased the camera from. They feel there is definitely something wrong. Could be a bad card reader. They are taking it back in and will send it off to Nikon for repair.

Meanwhile I'll just keep shooting my Sony Nex 7 but no bird in flight photography for me until this camera comes back.

Thanks for the help.
