It's not the art, in some cases, that's the problem, it's the wrong canvas for that art.
I never got kids who defaced/scribbled all over their notebooks or book covers in school either.
Some of the tattoos out there are just hideous. |

I'd agree with that, but she's not talking about, nor showing us "hideous" tattoos. I'm not into tattoos myself, but I've watched a lot of tattoo shows (Miami Ink, LA Ink, NY Ink, etc.) and was fascinated and impressed by most of the folks who got them - their reasons and their stories were very touching and inspirational and of course, these were all top notch artists doing the work. It's one thing if you're just getting some cool image painted on, but for many people, they are tributes and memories. Obviously not for everyone, but it is definitely an art.
I'm wondering why Neat is so vehemently opposed to even viewing them? Is it some sort of phobia? Seems a bit extreme. ...and maybe stubborn (you said we could call you that!) ;-) |

Imagine having to wear your favourite garment for the rest of your life. That permanence thing is what puzzles me.

Yup -- same here. My tastes have changed so much over the years. Other than my husband and children, I can't see much that I'd want to be stuck with, permanently, never to be shed (except painfully and expensively) for the rest of my life.
Might as well just go henna and change it up. |

It's cool - I don't "have to know" - to each his/her own. I was just curious, but I can respect your private views. :) |

Yeah, the "permanence" is what always deterred me. I have always tried to live by one main rule: Don't (intentionally) do anything permanent (like kill myself or someone or anything that will get me thrown in prison or get a tattoo). The exception was having children.
The permanence of a tattoo is not a bad thing for those personal tribute, inspirational or memorial tattoos, IMO. |

On the one hand, some of us womenfolk like to pierce our ears and hang glittery things from them,
and wear shoes with high heels that deform our spines and change our carriage,
on the other hand, we are appalled when someone writes/draws something on their skin.
Fortunately there are many who say "to each his own" and let it go at that.

Mostly, I just keep wondering where all these hairless people come from.... Not a body hair anywhere on them. |

And on the subject of Tattoos... Meh.
Now scarification? That's a great body art form.

I shouldn't click on a link where it's written scarification just after dinner... |

I've got a few friends who probably have upwards of 33% tattooed, and generally they have come to accept the transitory nature of inspiration and decision for a piece. My most tattooed friend (probably approaching 60%) will openly admit stupid tattoos, but still respect them as a place and time he was at. And while some tattoos are meaningful to people, there are plenty that are chosen for aesthetic reasons, because they enjoy the image. This doesn't degrade the work, it's part of the art form. It's not an easy specialty. Consider that everybody's skin takes ink and behaves differently. Try painting on an ever changing canvas with no consistency.
And as for the impermanence- everything is permanent. It can't be changed. What is done is done. The indelibility is already present in our actions, but we rarely choose to think of it that way. |

Nothing to do with tattoos, but I'm trying to decide to put a sure lower half entry that I don't even care for myself in or sit this one out. |
