so says a newly released research study. article here, abstract here.

well, at least taking them willy-nilly. it appears to be safe if you are actually paying attention to what you are doing.

Don't have time to read it this morning but sounds like it should help deter fauxtogs...which is always a good thing :-)

That research isn't in sync with the way my memory works. When I take a photo it sort of "locks in" that moment in time for me. My ability to remember whatever it is I'm photographing increases considerably as opposed to not taking the photograph. In addition taking the photograph helps me remember in more detail than if I hadn't. I guess, in effect, in causes me to pay more specific attention to what I'm looking at. (I only read 1 article, I didn't read the "abstract" article").

I was only able to read the blurb, but it seems the issue was not the impairment of all memory, but the ability to remember discrete parts of a bigger whole when only the whole was photographed.

That being said, one photograph of a very specific thing might change your impression of a day long ago by only letting you remember that specific instance. As our brain "forgets" or lets go of the pathways to a certain memory- the way it "relearns" that memory is through a photo, be it a glorious effort or a snapshot, and the brain builds white lies to match that photo, perhaps.

But this should not discourage photography, it should reinforce it, and it should remind us that photography is more than an exercise in the "photo-realistically capturing an event for posterity."

STOP READING THE DAILY MAIL! IT'S BAD FOR YOU!

The abstract was interesting. Not sure it's how my memory works though.

+1

As I say, if it's in the Mail, then it must be true.

What are fauxtogs and why do they need deterring?

Ahh, thanks Mike.

What a load of smug, stupid, onanistic crap. I'd rather be a fauxtographer than the kind of twat who runs that website.

i'll offer up my two cents. I dont really care about my memory, what i have learned to care about is actually enjoying the moment.

if i go to say my daughters violin concert, i wont take photos or video, I'd rather enjoy the performance. i've learned over the past few months that i enjoy things much more when im not trying to capture the perfect moment. i prefer enjoy the moment and give it my attention and try to create the perfect image later on my own time.

I read the first story, but forgot what is said after clicking the link on the 30 most beautiful victoria secret models..;p
In truth, I wonder how much the results are skewed considering this was a controlled assignment rather than a normal activity.
