I did not know Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were inspired by a woman Rear Admiral and Computer Scientist who was one of the first programmers and pretty much started COBOL!
I know it's little late for this but... YOU GO GIRL!

I think she also coined the term "computer bug" when they had to retrieve an actual dead insect out from among the relays and vacuum tubes. |

I'm blown away by her wikipedia entry.
she pretty much invented programming language. and I don't mean some specific programming language, I mean the whole concept of a compiled language running commands. |

I heard her speak - and she pretty much blew everyone away. We were in "boot camp" where no one breaks the rules, ever, and expects to survive. But her lecture was so fascinating and she was willing to keep speaking, that a whole bunch of us simply stayed longer, missing the next scheduled whatever. It was worth it! She gave out examples of nano and pico seconds - strips of wire cut from old computers from the Pentagon, and packages of pepper (picoseconds!) she used to steal from Wendy's. But when DEC found out about her talks, they had pepper packaged and marked as Picoseconds for her to use. I may not remember much of my time at "boot camp" (thankfully!) but I very clearly remember the delight of hearing Admiral Grace Hopper speak. |

As a COBOL programmer, I learned all about her in college.
She was quite an amazing woman. |
