I've really been experimenting a lot with abstracts from nature and would love to see more of your work in this area and what you think makes an effective abstract shot. Here are a few of my own fairly recent images that I consider abstract but are from nature:

And my shot from the Abstract challenge:

Please, keep experimenting. These are enchanting!! I left you some comments. I hope some others can say it better than I can, though. The first two are just amazing creations.

Beautiful work, David! I love abstracts, especially when they are so well executed. Keep it up :-)

Hi David,
If this is an experiment, you have acheived a Mad Scientist status.

These are beautiful renditions to mother nature's abstract.

Keep doing what you are doing - this is a niche.

I've dabbled a little with it too BTW.

I enjoyed the filigré 'Puff' with all that depth and, then, the highlights well contained.
Here are two older ones of mine. A third one is in the making. ;-)

Hoping these count as abstract....(have to admit they are 35mm though---it's all I've got in my archives)

and my favorite...

These are wonderful! Puff is my favorite. If you don't check it out at full size, you just don't know what you are missing. This is an amazing image. The thumbnail just can't do it justice.

Thanks for posting so many wonderful images! It looks like abstract has some 'special' rules that need fulfilling to be successful. From studying your photos, it looks like special attention is drawn to things like contrast, line and color. Since abstract photos don't really tell a story or even have symbols to grasp (speaking generally?), these other elements become important in and of themselves. Rather than telling a story, they are the story, so they need to be engaging in and of themselves.

Any other thoughts? Am I on the right track?
