My interpretation is that the job at hand is to plant your camera somewhere and snap away, creating an interesting collage of what eventually crossed your camera's path, be it people, squirrels, vehicles, etc.

The scene in general should remain the same, but the characters you blend in will be far (or not so far) greater than what would have been in a single capture. That's my take, at least.

Pelle Cass' selected people series is the inspiration of the challenge suggestion

OK. I thought the same way.

Now if it involves might be a no for me.

I have tried three different attempts and have now realised just how pointless this is.

All you need to do is to photograph a crowded location to achieve the same effect.

Its all very "Emperors New Clothes"

There's a certain feel to Pelle Cass's examples, though. I think you'll probably be able to tell the difference.

Gack!! this is due in 13 hours!!

These could be yours:

(They're kind of creepy in a way)

I loved that one!! I've been out of bird food for about a month. I don't think I could get squirrels in 13 hours... (but I thought about it!!)

You're right though -- it seemed kinda creepy -- even to me!)

How is this done? Do you have to mask out or mask in all the pieces from 100 different captures? I don't have or use PhotoShop, so if this requires a PS filter I'm out.

You can either select and copy an object from one file and paste it into another, or you can paste in an entire second photo (onto a new layer) and erase what you don't need. You don't need any filters, but it helps if your editing software supports layers. And you only need to combine more than one image to meet the challenge, not 100 ...

I won't be entering so I have no dog in this hunt. Challenge description says "exact same spot" but doesn't require that it point in the exact same direction, or use the exact same lens, or have the exact same exposure. In fact it doesn't even require the exact same camera.

Just trying to stimulate creativity ... And possibly controversy.

Anyone looking for a top 20 finish should enter this challenge.

I have to agree.. what you point out would be much more interesting than the examples given in the suggestion thread discussion from which the challenge was drawn... Exept maybe the photo of the squirrel and pigeon photo.... A bunch of photos of people walking through same spot...BORING!

Some of the people ones were boring, but some you need to look at to pick up the pattern he used. Several, he formed a rainbow of clothing colors, or everyone was wearing the same color, or all striped shirts, or the people formed a circle or straight line. the one with all of the dogs is pretty freakin' cool, too.

I have an old shot of 12 frames of a baseball pitcher throwing a pitch, where the images are overlayed so you see the steps in a single violent motion (and the elbow flexion does not look like anything human body ought to do) that takes place in a part of a second added together in one frame (This sort of thing but done with layers rather than flash). Or there are those mulit flash images of ballet dancers jumping across the frame ( think Edgerton's early work), or in painting there is DuChamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 or a whole lot of the cubist school.

It doesn't just have to be this method of picking out patterns in a crowd.

Well, *I'M* in with one that's pretty much about as far from the madding crowd as you can get :-)

I *AM* the madding crowd. All by myself.

Not really happy with mine but it's in anyway. Not exactly something I can redo on short notice...

"Far From the madding crowd's ignoble strife
Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray;
Along the cool sequester'd vale of life
They kept the noiseless tenor of their way."

Sure go for Gray over Hardy, typical elitist poet.
