The "close your eyes" challenge is a parody of honor challenges. If you distrust people and don't believe in honor, then this is the challenge for you.
If you love people and believe in honor, but have a sense of humor, this challenge is for you.
If you enjoy serendipity, this challenge is for you.
If you enjoy absurdity, this challenge is for you.
The rest of you can skip a challenge. And anyone who mentions TPL gets a kick in the shin. |

I love you, Don! :-)
I trust everyone will shoot with their eyes closed and give it their best shot. If they cheat, that's their problem. Kinda like those a$$hats who dope and ride. They're missing the whole point of a bicycle. But then, they're doing it for money, which I am not. Same can be said here, yes? |

And what about those of us who are "doing it for the money" and object to doping? Where does that leave us? |

Sure, but what's the point? To ensure that the one's who aren't trying to compete have fun, and that those who like to cheat win, while ensuring that every serious player is frustrated and angry?
I doubt the examples you listed have anywhere NEAR the potential for shittiness. |

Oh, I see, so you are serious and I am not, and therefore you deserve to have challenges suit you but I do not deserve to have challenges. Okay, I understand where you're coming from now. |

The challenge hasn't even been posted and the name-calling's started already ... :-(
I'm opposed to having challenges with rules which can't be enforced. I still think this would be better as a Side Challenge; you can set it up any way you want (including having people vote if ranking the results is important). |

I understand Cory's frustration -- the 47 steps challenge sucked. It's frustrating when you follow the rules and when someone else blatantly disregards them and places high. However, placement isn't everything. I saw things I hadn't seen before, and I gained more from it because of it.
The 4am-5am challenge -- I don't know if anyone cheated. It's easy to change the time on your camera. I didn't. I got up at 3:30am, with my son, and we went out on an adventure. I didn't place in the top 10, but my son and I had a blast, and he still asks when there's going to be another challenge like that, because it was a really special time.
If people are going to cheat -- they'll find a way to cheat in almost any challenge. Sometimes they're caught, sometimes they're not. Some challenges make it much, much easier to cheat. But why should we avoid those challenges just because someone might cheat? Too many people have left because they feel that a few people are manipulating votes. That happens occasionally, too.
I want to experience everything.
Screw the cheaters. It gives us a chance to feel morally superior when they're caught. Let's have the fun and not worry about the few, the bad, the creeps.
That being said -- it was fun once. I'd rather just have another abstract challenge. :) |

Are you serious? I can never tell.
From my perspective, it seems as though winning doesn't make a lick of difference to you.
(To be clear, I do think you enjoy winning, but I've gotten the impression that it's not at all your primary objective here)

I don't at all care. In fact, I think it's wonderful that some of us care more about doing it their way than winning.. That's something I can respect, and even enjoy on occasion.
I've included the expanded version of the quote above, so that you can see the genesis of why I seemed to care.
In fact, all I really care about is that we don't get into fricken bickering matches because of challenge ideas which lack foresight or knowledge of how DPC's particular quirks.
Like it or not, challenges like this are trouble - and I'm a tad suspicious that's part of what Don likes about this suggestion - I think he might enjoy a good joke ya know.. ;)

It means you are not a doping a$$hat. ;)
I'm surprised that this challenge topic would turn the box inside out.
By the way, has anybody actually ever heard these words uttered by their spouse, etc.? |

I agree with GeneralE -- this makes a better side challenge.
Though perhaps one where the voters close their eyes when voting would be fun. Or do they do that now? ;) |

It's difficult to communicate with you. I'm not talking about winning. I'm talking about allowing this challenge to go forward. You don't seem to understand the difference between winning and playing. |

Actually... It was Melthia who brought up the analogy of cycling and dopers, and by extension, winning... I was responding to that idea, with my question about where that leaves those who wish to compete successfully, but object to cheating. It was at that point you came in, with the quote above, apparently hurt that I wasn't considering your needs.
I still wonder, if we're cool with cheaters, then where does that leave those with honor who wish to compete? Do we just say screw it and join in the cheating? Abstain as you suggest so that it's certain that the cheaters will prosper? Do we play with honor and accept the fact that we are simply going to be betrayed by someone, and that there will be nothing done about it?
I see why you say this would be fun.. And I agree that it would, if people had any compulsion to follow the challenge rules. Where's the fun in it if you know people will cheat, and won't follow the rules that have been set. Many people won't even follow the challenge description when it's dead-clear - this is something that 30% of people will half-heartedly do, 10% will do with gusto, and the other 60% will cheat to varying degrees. (numbers are SWAGs....[Scientific Wild Assed Guesses]..)

I'm not telling you how to feel about cheaters. Honor falls on its sword, and doesn't glance over to make sure the other guy is doing the same.
Basically, what you're telling me is that honor is very important to you and therefore every challenge should make it as easy as possible for you to be honorable. Something is wrong with this picture. |

Don, if we're going to have voting and ribbons and such, we cannot allow "cheating" ... some photographers may chose to compromise their integrity, but I don't think the site should.
If the challenge is simply "for fun" then make it a side challenge where it is not possible to cheat anyone but yourself.
