If Jeb (really, Jeb, not Wendy... Jeb)
If Jeb wanted to buy a 256 ssd drive for his current computer (or maybe a 500), is there a particular drive that you guys recommend?
Jeb thanks you, I'm sure... :) |

Without knowing Jebs budget, i would tell Jeb to head over to Newegg ... huge selection with lots of reviews. |

On this particular aspect, cost is *NO* object!

Ooooh -- thanks! I'm sure Jeb appreciates this immensely! ;)
I think he'll like the 480GB, but the 960GB and 1TB are so tempting... |

I'd say get a Core i5, 16GB of RAM, and a decent graphics card. If you find that you're waiting a long time for graphics card-powered things (e.g certain filters) to load, you might want to get a workstation card. If you need 30-bit color, get an NVidia Quadro card... just don't go for the cheapest one. If you can spend an extra $100-200, step up to an i7 processor. |

Just to be clear, I have 16GB of RAM, and almost NEVER use the first 8... Given that I do some pretty heavy computing, I think it would be a smart move to monitor your resource graphs and see where your bottleneck is before doing anything really. Or, you can just throw money at it, enough money and you'll almost certainly find the problem. :D |

Going against the grain her to say for the average Joe..big time computing is NOT a necessity.
I have a simple quad core AMD Phenom chip with 16 GB RAM and and OLD hand-me-down graphics card. No crazy fast CPU, no SSD, no tricked out anything.
I have NEVER EVER had to wait for Photoshop or Lightroom to process any of my images more than a second or two maybe with the NIK filters.
Unless you're doing hardcore processing with a lot of layers at full res like Gyaban or expect to be doing complex compilations, or this is your business, I honestly do not think spending $$$$ on a top of the range computer is an efficient use of your dollars.
Never run into a bottleneck once on my mid-tier computer. Anything more would be in the land of diminishing returns.
IMO. |
