How do I check the total images I have shot with my canon 10d? Does it keep a running total?? I would appreciate the help.

I think there is an option in the Menu where it asks for "Continuos numbering' or "Reset". If you have this at continuous all the time, the images it saves has the number. something like "IMG_1500"

Even with continuous numbering I believe that you can affect the number listed by putting in a CF card that has been used in another camera. I believe the only way to know how many actuations you have used is to have Canon test the camera with their software at one of the Canon authorized repair shops.

I connected mine up to the computer and tried the Canon software that allows you to change settings like the owner's name. That software displays the serial number on the body but it doesn't give any info on the number of actuations.

I don't know about the Canon but in my Nikon I just have to look at the filename. The last picture I submitted was Img1508.JPG and that was picture from that camera number 1508.

And I have changed the memorycard between cameras several times.

And it's easy to check if it's correct or not with just look through your folder where you store your files.

If you look at your file structure of your images that should tell you, it starts at folder 100, and each folder contains 100 shots. That means to reach folder 101, you have taken 100 shots.

If you are at folder 750, that means you have taken just over 65000 shots. (Assuming camera has been left at the default values.) It automatical is selected for continuous numbering.

I'm not doubting the validity of Carol's solution but if such is the case then I'm at about 54,000 actuations instead of the 45,000 that I thought I was at. -SIGH-
I've read that inserting cards from other cameras can affect the image number (after the first 3 digits and "_" character) which might inflate or deflate the number of images in a folder. I know of one instance where I did this when shooting with a friend and I put one of his CF cards into the camera. I'll look this up to see if there is any noticeable difference in the final 4 digits.

BTW, for those of you with only 5,000 or 10,000 actuations you can use me as a reference for how the 10D holds up. I do love the 10D but I don't coddle it. It's fallen off the table onto a cheap 75-300 lens (hurt the lens but not the body), been out in the rain and dirt and it still works.

That cannot be correct, because my file number is only at 104??? I have shot well in excess of 10,000 shots this year? But I also have my camera set to reset the numbering? I just though that somehow it kept a running total? I appreciate all the input though!

There is a menu option to have it reset your numbering. The default is to do it continuously. Check your menu settings :-)

It wraps at 10,000 shots.

The wrapping drives me crazy, it's like the odometer turning (at 31,000+) and when doing a search on a 4 digit number get the other two hits as well.

I haven't had that sort of result with my CFs, switching them occasionally to the Nikon and back. A folder gets created on the card for each brand. I normally reformat between each use, in the camera, though.
