I am wondering what is causing rings or ripple like shapes appear in the pictures. It's strange that while editing the pic in Gimp or Photoshop, the image appears smooth. But once it's saved and viewed in the web browser (IE6) it has all those rings for each shade change.
How would I get rid of them? Is it particular to LCD displays?
Example. Look at the pic below. At the transition from red to yellow at the edges it looks like elevation map.
Or am I seeing things?

But then I can open the same compressed image in Gimp and everything's smooth.
I have an image for the challenge that displays those rings. I want it to look its best.

I have an LCD and a CRT monitor at work. Neither is calibrated. The rings show on the LCD monitor, but not on the CRT monitor. I've seen them before on other photos (and I'm almost certain on a CRT monitor), and was curious but never found an explanation. |

Make sure all your color preferences everywhere are set to "millions of colors" (aka 24-bit color) -- the browser or monitor may be set up to display in 256 or "thousands" of colors instead, leading to this type of "banding" or posterization.

You hit the nail on the head!!!! I did not even think to check that! I set the color to True Color (32 bit) and it fixed the problem. 16 bit is not cutting it.
Thanks again!
