For the last several years I had my calendars printed up by a friend at a printshop. Then she left so I had to find another place, and used LifePics (through Henrys here in Canada).

So though the calendars turned out pretty well, they were lacking in some areas - the printers had clearly added black though I told them not to, and the b/ws had a distinct bluish cast to them. I would have rejected them but it was too close to Xmas so I settled. Then a month later I had to print out another calendar, only this time I got smart and lightened up the images by 50% or so. But this time the b/ws had a pinky cast to them.

Now, as I prepare my calendar images, I am getting trepidatious about using this firm again. Calendars are also going to clients, so they had better look good.

So I emailed the printer and told them I had processed my images in Adobe RGB; what colour profile are they using?

*crickets chirping*

Two days later, still no reply. As it seems that they don't know themselves what a colour profile is, let alone which one they're using, I'm going elsewhere. Esp at $20/calendar.

If you have access to Costco they use profiles from Dry Creek Photo.

However, I'm not sure if this type of profile applies to calendars, becasue I don't think they're printed on photo paper, but rather with a printer which possibly/probably uses CMYK inks or pigments. If so, you will almost certainly experience color shifts and a markedly reduced color gamut* compared to your monitor.

*The RGB gamut of a monitor in 24-bit color is potentially 16.7 million colors, the CMYK gamut is closer to 7000 colors, with the worst distortion/loss occurring in bright deep blues and reds.
