OK Computer Guru's

This is TWICE this has happened (apparently with the same update) because I've done restores back before it and all is good....
My Iphone works ie can get on net, but NOT my tower which is hard wired... I've been with TECH support on Centurylink (last week for 5 hours, today only 2) Everyone I know hubby, friends, that got that update had NO problems with it... I don't know that is the cause but 2 times???

A) anyone had the same problem?? and what did you do?

B) Can u tell me where I can let the update download but not install??? IE so I can ask around if there are issues before I let an update do it's dirty work... I don't think there's anything wrong with this one but.... I keep having to take it back before the update so not wanting to let the stupid thing do it AGAIN!!!

Thanks... OH PS talk to me like I'm a kindergarten child, oh wait no they know more about computers than I do.. so Below age 5

if you have windows 7...

go to control panel. verify that in the upper right hand corner it is showing either large or small icons, not categories. if you are displaying categories, click the down arrow next to the word categories and select small icons.

then select the icon for windows update.

from this screen you can do most of what you need. on the right hand side is a selection "change settings"

My brother just updated windows on his MacBook Pro and he said it messed with his registry. He had to open in 'safe' mode

It's not normally a good idea to defeat installation of an update. If an update is causing something else to break, you should strive to solve the underlying issue. In the case of interruption in network access, it could be a number of things. Since you are hard-wired, it would seem likely that it is either the driver for the network adapter, or the configuration of said adapter.
The things that I would try, in order, are:
1.) Troubleshoot network connection. Often, if the configuration of the network adapter is at fault, this will clear it. If it fails...
2.) Open Device manager and look at the network adapter, see if the system reports it is working properly If it is not, look at the version of the installed driver, and update if required. If that does not clear the issue, or if it reports as working properly, then...
3.) Try to create a new network connection from scratch. If this fails, then...
4.) Do a web search on the update number that is giving you problems, something like "KB123456 problems network" and see if others are reporting issues. There may be an identified solution.
