After eleven days of closure, Rocky Mountain National Park will reopen today, thanks to Colorado Governor Hickenlooper arranging to pay the NPS employees for the next 10 days. This is great news for photographers, tourists and businesspeople. We will be able to enjoy the last phases of the fall color season and elk rut and visit our favorite places in our treasured national park.

I did arrange a peaceful march on the gates of the park last Thursday. Not sure it made a difference, but it may have. My face and words in the following news coverage video at about 1:30. //www.9news.com/video/2735764885001/1/Feds-to-let-states-pay-to-open-parks

That's awesome news!
And perhaps it did. :)

How can such a park close down?
Is it completely depending on the government?
Isn't it partially self-sufficient?

Stupid questions, I know...

I would say that, THANKFULLY, the national parks around here are still open. And they are.
But I have yet to visit them. :(

Over a 2-3 hour drive just isn't feasible with 2 kids (5-6 years old). There's no way I could focus on photography AND them.

But I'm hoping to get out to Dolly Sods, WV in the VERY NEAR future. They are supposed to have some spectacular fall colors.

In line with the title, but having nothing to do with shutdowns or parks, here's this:

Photographing strangers together

Apologies for the ad at the beginning - can't do anything about that.

What a wonderful project! And on top of that, what a very cool camera he has... I had one like that except smaller, back in the day. His looks like 8x10 film, mine was 5x7... Something about all that wood and brass really put people at ease...

So two things related in my neck of the woods:

preservation Virginia owns 22.5 acres of the national park land on Jamestown Island, and so they can reopen that portion.

And even though they rent from the National Park Service and were ordered to close, Carrot Tree decided to open for business

and so far they're still open

Peaceful protest marches are effective. We had police force presence from city, county, state and national park show up fearing we were "Barbarians at the Gate". We saw drones and helicopters overhead. I think the "powers that be" fear organized protest. Social media was used to the nth degree. We also used the 4th estate to promote our cause. Our efforts produced results, primarily because we have a Colorado Governor who would like to run for Pres. I will say that my Vietnam War protest training came home to roost. LOL!!!
