Walk into your room and smell the acrid scent of the magic smoke leaving a capacitor.

What's worse? Not being able to figure out which device/charger/etc made the smell. Clearly some capacitor smoked itself tonight, but I can't figure out what it was in. :-\

That's your brain, Cory, better go in for a tune-up :-)

And the typo in the title doesn't at all help to dispel this notion.

All of you non-native speakers around here are so darn good though that I wouldn't be surprised if a few did spot it. It's rare than any of the 'regular' non-native speakers make even a small mistake. Impressive, and all the more reason for me to be embarrassed about the typo. ;)

I've had one CRT-screen, one Florescent tube light-fitting and two UPS failures at work in the last 18 months.

Twice involving a lot of smoke, once some flames.

I had the electrician in to look at the items. He said that a UPS or screen will never start a fire. Right.

I have now installed smoke detectors in each room.

I's happy they did fix.

I smelled that back in 2010 the night before we were to go out of town for a week's vacation. It was the spare computer I had built with a cheapo generic power supply back in 2003. I only use name brand power supplies with a good reputation now.

What's strange is that nothing seems to be dead.

Proves that your equipment is full of unnecessary parts. The manufacturer's brother-in-law owns a capacitor supply company. ;-)

When I was in the Navy, I repaired radar display consoles. The console had a high-voltage deflection amplifier mounted in front of a water cooled heat-exchanger. There was one console on the ship's bridge that, when some idiot left the bridge wing doors open in a humid climate, would "sweat" and dump condensation into the deflection amp. LOTS of smoke, sparks and sometimes flames. Happened more than once and I had to rebuild the unit each time. Very distinct smell - electrical fires.

It's your BRAIN, I tell you! Ghost smells! Serious stuff! A neurological consult is called for, at a minimum. Be prepared for an ad hoc lobotomy. It's for your own good, d00d.

Yay!

Can we do it via the trans-orbital method? (looks pleasant doesn't it?)
