This is so sad and upsetting for me, I have spent a lot of time photographing this herd and these two mustangs in particular. I cannot for the life of me see why people would do this.....disturbing

What a shame. Some people are just plain mean. |

Disturbing is a vast understatement. Hugely glad that it's considered a felony now.
I'm so sorry -- the article made me feel sick, and I don't even know the herd. It must be awful when you know those gorgeous animals.

Terrible. Mans inhumanity to animals is ceaseless. South Africa has lost over 600 Rhino's this year alone to poachers. Why? Asians believe the powder of the horn (keratin - same stuff your toenails are made of) is an aphrodisiac. A gram of the powder is worth more than a gram of gold. |

Shit, seriously?
Can't we harvest that in a renewable, humane fashion? I need a herd of fricken rhinos. |

Absolutely sickening. No other word for it. As for why anyone would do this? They would probably say they were bored...and happened to have a gun with them at the time. Local rancher, maybe? Cattle do a helluvalot more damage via grazing than a few dozen mustangs would do. Horses have teeth on both top and bottom jaws; they crop the grass close to the ground. Cows only have teeth on the bottom jaw, they do a lot more damage to get at the grass.
And why the f**k are poachers still killing frickin rhinos for their horns?! If they were REALLY smart they would collect human hair and nail clippings, grind it to powder and colour it the same colour as powdered rhino horn.
After all, the poor rhinos have an absolutely crap record in terms of reproduction - they're almost extinct for fuck's sake!!! We're the ones who are 7 billion+ and counting.
Frankly I would have no problem going down to the local hairdresser and Vietnamese nail salon, bagging their sweepings from a week or so, and doing whatever it takes to look like powdered rhino horn. (It's just the shape of the horn that gets them all excited.) Then I'd market and sell it to the Asian community as gen-u-wine powdered rhino horn. Sure, it's a classic bait'n'switch, but you think anyone cares? If people in this day and age are going to continue to be so incredibly gullible as to the supposed properties of rhino horn, they deserve to be ripped off.

Hey I am all about hunting. I love hunting. It helps to prevent over population in alot of cases. The meat is eaten. I hate the senseless slaughter of wild animals. I.E. the poaching of elephants / rhinos for their Ivory...or the killing of wild mustangs (unless the mustangs are experiencing over population)

It's being talked about but too many "conservationists" are saying we shouldn't feed the Asian habit. Street value is between $60k and $100k USD per kg.
I've been asking what is the difference between a croc farm, battery chickens and cattle? Not much. Except with the Rhino the horn regrows.
From a technical perspective you don't just walk up to a Rhino and "clip" it's horn... Whilst it's just a mass of hair, and it can be cut off the 1-2 Tonne beast has to be tranquillised first. Any slight mistake in the dosage and the "antidote" to wake it up again and the animal will die. If it lies wrong during the procedure it can suffocate. Logistically there are very few veterinarians who can successfully tranquillise a Rhino and bring it back. It is also rather traumatic for the animal.
Susan, there's an organisation that has been collecting human hair and nail clippings, stuffing them in envelopes and mailing them to Asian consulates and embassies all over the world... |

Indeed. Apparently, they have NO problem passing crap off for the "real thing" in many areas. Harvey posted that over at FB. |
