Hey all
This morning during rush hour there was a horrific accident at a small park'n'ride/train depot not far from where I was working today.
For some reason the driver of a double-decker bus completely ignored the fact that a railway crossing's arms were down, lights and warning bells etc going off, and even though passengers were screaming at him to stop, ran into a small passenger train running the corridor between Montreal and Toronto.
The bus lost. 5 dead at the scene and a 6th died in hospital. 30 injured.
As of yet nobody has any idea what happened - eyewitness accounts vary with one bus rider saying the driver was frantically trying to brake, others saying the bus didn't slow at all.
Anyway as my workplace today had the footage playing over and over again, it was really getting to me - the whole sense of helplessness and being unable to have done anything to prevent it. Just wanted to get it off my chest. |

Terrible to hear this Susan. Yes, it's all over the news over here, as well.
There's just nothing to say, really, when something like this comes this close to home.
I wish there was. |

So sorry to hear, Susan. Did the bus driver survive? |

It was quite a shock. It's just down the street and I drove by that spot on my way to work about 40 minutes before it happened. I hate to think what the results would have been if the train hit the bus instead of the other way around.
The daughter of someone at work was on the bus, luckily she only suffered a few bruises. |

Horrible news - was reading about the crash on CNN online when I noticed this thread. Things like this just remind you how precious life is. |

No, he was one of the 5 killed at the scene. Don't know if he blacked out or had a heart attack or something, they'll have to do an autopsy. Such a bizarre and sad incident.
@ rcollier - so glad your coworker's daughter managed to get away (physically anyway) with only bruises. There were about 80 people aboard.

I drive by this area 3-4 times a week on my way to work. It's a heavy traffic area that has been under scrutiny. Ken thhe driver was killed instantly. News reports are saying how he drove people around the city in his own car during the last strike. It is so sad. My heart goes out to all the people touched by this. |

News last night says the driver was a good guy and had just celebrated his wife's birthday the day before with all of his family and friends...such a sad thing to happen to anybody.
i know that highway traffic was extra congested today, most people are taking their cars today. |

Road deaths are no accident. Most are avoidable. Terrible news Susan.
Last week a Horse and Trailer plowed through a red light in Durban and killed 23. After a lot of bleeding hearts jumped in and gave solace and aid to the driver and called a lynching for the truck company, what's emerging now is all the drivers paperwork was false. False license, false Public Drivers Permit, false references... The driver is an immigrant and his papers are from his own country (Sz) where it is not possible to determine the validity of them. Truck company must also be to be blame...despite there being a mandatory "test" of the new employees skills, they let him onto a massive road truck and not a few smaller vehicles to bed him in so to speak.
