Yeah, you're a regular Rosa Parks. Thanks for throwing a wet blanket on what would be a fun challenge for many of us. |
And like I also said, it's pretty damned obvious that this is the case. Sorry the truth is so unpalatable. But hey, you guys wanna have a 'my kid is cuter/better-looking than yours?' challenge, hey, go for it!!
It just galls me to see certain members do nothing but rely heavily on their offspring to ribbon. Again, I'm pretty damn sure I'm not the only person here thinking it, but the only one brave enough to say anything about it.
And while you're at it...make sure you Facebook your entries, asking 'OMG which one do I enter?!' so all your DPC *friends* see them and vote heavily in your favour. Have fun.

I don't think it's about bravery, it's just that no one else has their granny panties on as tightly as you do. Lighten the hell up. It's a freakin digital ribbon and you're acting like you see lights on at the Watergate. If you believe people are cheating at voting and you have evidence then notify site council. Otherwise you just sound like a bitter old hag. |

Um, no... you're ranting with baseless accusations. Don't confuse delusion with bravery. DPC photographers repeatedly use the same models, locations, pets, self-portraits and other subject matter for the simple reason that they're handy. Quite a few photographers can be recognized by their style even if they use complete strangers, and voting high for friends is against the rules. We regularly monitor and suspend people who vote up buddies and/or troll everyone else. Trust me, entries don't score well BECAUSE of a recognizable model, but because of the photograph. My most-photographed daughter just landed the lowest score I've seen in years, and my worst score ever was a photo of my wife. Send 200 DPC members to Cannon Beach and you'll probably see the same names at the top and bottom of the results despite the familiar subject.

Janine, please don't get upset. It's a challenge suggestion. I know I did go off on a bit of a tangent, as has happened before. And will probably happen again. But please realize that this is not a personal attack against you.
Shannon, I can understand people using the same props, settings, people/pets etc due to their handiness. Still, I reserve the right to express my jadedness due to overuse of same. Surely you've heard the term, 'familiarity breeds contempt'? So yes, I am getting fed up with seeing the same kids/pets etc ribboning. And it's quite clear from comments made during the challenge that both photog and models are very well known, and thus likely to get higher votes.
And regarding the whole friend voting thing...I can easily point out at least one image that ribboned after being posted on Facebook. Seeing how some people post everything they ever do and every image they ever take, I can only imagine the headache involved in trying to keep DPCers honest.
But even more galling, in the case of another image - which had a thread devoted to nothing but improving that certain image, the DPCer then entering that image and SURPRISE! It ribboned! So where was SC when this happened?! I never heard of any kind of suspension or DQ in that instance. I'm sure it's happened several times before and slipped through the cracks, but this one really sticks in my mind. |

Correlation is not causation. If every one of a Facebook user's buddies registered and voted, they would still be in the minority (and investigated for obviously suspicious voting activity). I can point out at least one entry where people actually did that and were punished accordingy.

Suspend or DQ for what? There is no rule against entering an image that has been posted in the forums, in your portfolio or even on Facebook. There's a bunch of those in every Hidden Gem and Annual Best-of challenge. If that photo that was discussed in the thread offended you as an entry, then you probably gave it a low vote, and if you're so convinced that others share your concern, then they would also give low votes and the entry could never score well (negating your premise). IMO, the far greater offense is that you think so little of your fellow members that you assume the majority can't vote fairly on an image they've seen. We have spouses that enter challenges and GTGs where a dozen or more DPCers are present for the shoot. It would be unreasonable to ban those entries just because you assume the worst in others. |

I never said it was an image I found offensive, in the thread soliciting help with it, that later ribboned. I believe I gave it a fair vote. But isn't this site meant to be about voting on an image where you DON'T know the identity of the photographer? What's happened to the whole factor of anonymity? In fact, it's only been quite recently that we've begun to see noobs and returning members ribboning.
So, priming the pump by posting images you're going to enter - on social media sites and in DPC threads - is acceptable. Good to know. Hey, if everyone else is allowed to do it and reap the rewards, then all I have to do is shoot, and post in advance, images that pander to everyone else's tastes.
Only one thing holds me back though - principles, anyone? So I'll carry on doing what I do and ribbon every 30 months or so. But at least it's always with an image whose integrity has NOT been compromised by social media or a 'help me with this image' thread.

Hogwash. We've ALWAYS had newbies and returning members ribboning.

I look forward to your new excuse when that doesn't work. |

Well, that's never going to happen, because to do so goes against everything I am as both a person and photographer. Having a business to run and actually work for a living cuts a lot into what would otherwise be shooting time. And I don't care if I never win another ribbon.
Still, kudos for trying, Shannon! You should know by now that I'm a little on the stubborn side.
Howzabout this: have two categories for every challenge - those that have previously posted their entries on social media sites/help threads here, and another for those who haven't done so.
